Lacrosse Unable to Hold Off Boston's Hot Start in Season Finale

WASHINGTON – The American University lacrosse team (6-10, 2-7, PL) closed out its season in a highly contested matchup as the Eagles fell to the Boston University Terriers (9-8, 4-5 PL) 19-15 at the Jacobs Complex during the Eagles' annual Pride Game. The game extended the Eagles' streak of losses to seven to conclude the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sophomore Becca Frank and freshman Reagan Murdoch led the way for the Eagles with three goals each, while Frank also notched a pair of assists in the effort. Frank was also able to secure a draw control to go with a caused turnover.
  • Freshman Annabelle Jackson and sophomore Alyssa Apuzzo helped buoy the offensive effort with two goals apiece. Apuzzo also recorded an assist through the game.
  • Senior Sydney Wender scored her first goal of the season while junior Hannah Spease, senior Emma Hare, freshman Kellie Linehan and sophomore Maddy Spratt joined in the action with a goal each.
  • Spratt and Spease also contributed to the scoring effort with some concise passing as Spratt found American attackers for three assists and Spease added one assist of her own.
  • Junior Lizzie De Guzman also helped American keep possession with six draw controls. Spease and junior Jordan Mitchell gathered five and three draw controls, respectively. Linehan and Frank also grabbed a draw control through the contest.
  • Spease also helped a concerted defensive effort with three caused turnovers while senior Sadie Herman, Linehan, Murdoch and Frank also caused a turnover.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers struck first with four straight goals to start the game before American was able to find the back of the net. Linehan scored the Eagles' first goal of the game with 7:41 remaining in the quarter off a free position shot, scoring goal No. 27 for her.
  • While Boston was able to get on the board again with another goal 40 seconds after the Eagles' first, Murdoch was able to respond quickly with a goal, assisted by Frank. Not content with just an assist, Frank put in her own shot just over two minutes later with an assist from Spratt to bring the Eagles' within striking distance at 5-3.
  • Before the first quarter could come to a close, however, the Terriers were able to extend their lead with a pair of goals in the final 34 seconds of the frame.
  • Boston kept the hot hand with another goal to open the second quarter, but the Eagles responded quickly with a goal from Murdoch on a free position before Spease drove home another goal to close the gap, 8-5.
  • The Eagles and Terriers proceeded to trade goals over the next three minutes. While Boston scored next, Hare with an assist from Spease scored less than a minute later.
  • The Terriers scored at the three-minute mark, only to have Spratt score just over a minute later on a free position before Jackson scored another goal 53 seconds later to keep the Eagles within contention, trailing 10-8, going into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, the Eagles' offense pushed the tempo as Apuzzo scored a goal 25 seconds into the second half before she assisted Murdoch for another goal two minutes later to tie the game at 10 apiece.
  • Boston, though, scored five unanswered goals to extend its lead to 15-10 before Frank, with an assist from Spratt, was able to get the Eagles back on the board. Despite the Eagles' efforts, the Terriers were able to answer with another two goals before the end of the third quarter to take a 17-11 lead.
  • The Eagles jumped back on the board three minutes into the final frame as Apuzzo scored a man-up with Frank on the assist. Jackson notched another goal for American a minute later to bring the Eagles within four goals.
  • The Eagles' comeback efforts, though, were stymied as Boston was able to score two more goals to push its lead to 19-13, midway through the final frame.
  • Despite the deficit, American continued its charge as Frank scored her third goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining. However, the Eagles were kept off the board until the final minute when Spratt found Wender for the final goal of the game.
