Wrestling Hands out Team Honors at the 2022-23 Year-End Awards Banquet

WASHINGTON - To celebrate a strong year under second year head coach Jason Borrelli, the American University wrestling team held a year-end awards banquet on Saturday, April 15. Ten different awards and special recognitions were given out altogether, and dinner was served to a full room of Eagles, family, alumni, staff and friends.

The six Eagles pictured in the photo at the top were recipients of “Protect the Nest Awards,” given for most outstanding performance in each home dual. The winners were Lucas White (vs. Bucknell), Will Jarrell (vs. Binghamton), Connor Bourne (vs. Air Force), Jack Nies (vs. Lock Haven), Patrick Ryan (vs. Virginia Tech), and Caleb Campos (vs. Army).

Pictured above, from left to right, are the Iron Eagle award, the Outstanding Newcomer award and the Most Dominant Wrestler award. Jack Nies was presented the Iron Eagle honor from strength coach Glen Kalbaugh, Caleb Campus earned the Outstanding Newcomer award, and Maximilian Leete was named the Most Dominant Wrestler.

Next up were the Most Improved, Coaches Award and Outstanding Scholar-Athlete award. Most Improved went to Jack Nies, while Raymond Lopez and Devon Capato were co-winners of the Coaches Award. Jack Maida took home the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete honor.

The final three awards of the night were the Brian Sulmonetti Memorial Exemplary Teammate Award, Most Outstanding Wrestler, and the BAGUBA Award. Sulmonetti's teammate Mike Stanley (‘79) was on hand to present Will Jarrell and Luc Maschino with that honor. Jack Maida was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler, and Lucas White earned the BAGUBA Award given to an individual the best exemplifies what the coaches look for in an AU wrestler.
