Lacrosse Ends Three-Game Homestead with Loss to #23 Navy

WASHINGTON – The Eagles fought to the end, led by freshman Kellie Linehan who notched three goals, but were unable to mount an attack that would sink Navy on Wednesday afternoon at Jacobs Complex. The American University lacrosse team (6-7, 2-4 PL) fell to the 23rd-ranked Mids of Navy (11-3, 5-1 PL) by a score of 17-8.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Linehan's three goals and one assist kept American competitive throughout the contest. She also picked up a ground ball and claimed a draw control.
  • Junior midfielder Hannah Spease tallied a brace for the Eagles. On top of her two goals from her two shots on goal, Spease also had three ground balls to lead AU, a draw control, and a caused turnover to her line on the stat sheet.
  • Alyssa Apuzzo, Becca Frank, and Kristen Hegarty each had a goal in the game as well. For Hegarty, her goal in the final frame was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Reagan Murdoch and Kate Petronis also pitched in offensively, Murdoch with two assists and Petronis with one.
  • Defensively, Grace Brennan and Jordan Mitchell each had two caused turnovers for American.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took just under four minutes for the Mids to break the stalemate and get the first goal of the contest and just one more minute to tack on a second to take an 0-2 lead over the Eagles.
  • Frank would cut the Navy lead in half with 6:45 left to play in the first frame, scoring her eighth of the season off an assist from Murdoch before the Mids fired back and took a 3-1 lead with 4:17 remaining in the opening period.
  • It was Linehan, scoring her first of the contest less than a minute later, that would bring the Navy lead back to just one, 2-3, but with two minutes remaining, the Mids grabbed another to head into the second period up 2-4 over AU.
  • A barrage from the Navy offense in the second frame gave the Mids a hefty lead. The visitors tacked on seven goals in a row, unanswered until the final three minutes of the half when Apuzzo capitalized on being a woman-up and earned the final goal of the opening thirty minutes for the Eagles who were trailing 3-11.
  • Coming out of the halftime break, American tacked on two more goals with Spease getting her first of the day thanks to an assist from Linehan, and then Linehan herself getting her second on a free position shot with ten minutes left to play in the third. Navy would then score five more times and the Eagles were behind 5-16 with one frame left.
  • The Eagles would go on to outscore Navy 3-1 in the final quarter. The first of the three goals was courtesy of Spease who was assisted by Murdoch with 7:27 left in the contest.
  • Linehan would find her third goal four minutes later with 3:37 left to play on a solo effort before the Mids scored a minute later, leading the Eagles 7-17 with 2:22 to play.
  • Hegarty would close out the contest with her first collegiate goal on an assist from Petronis, less than a minute remaining in the game that would see the Eagles fall 8-17 to the Mids.
  • Navy finished the game on Wednesday with a 21-7 draw control over the Eagles, with their number nine, Alyssa Daley grabbing 12 of those herself. They also out-shot American 25-11 in shots on goal.
