Jack Maida Scores an Upset to Advance to Day Two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships

TULSA, Okla. - With an upset of 18th-seeded Jason Shaner of Oregon State in the consolation first round, 31st-seeded Jack Maida advanced to day two at his first NCAA Championships. The sophomore went 1-1 overall and will continue his nationals run on Friday.

In his first round match, Maida came up against the No. 2 seed Daton Fix of Oklahoma State. Fix had a 6-0 lead before getting the win by fall in the first period after 2:15.

Maida returned to the mat for the late session to face Shaner of Oregon State. He trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 after the second, but made his move early in the third. Starting on bottom, he got a reversal 13 seconds in and immediately put Shaner on his back, pinning him just three seconds later.

The win by fall earned 2.5 points for American, the first points for the Eagles since 2019 and the most since AU scored a total of 4.5 in 2017.

Next up for Maida is a match against No. 17 Brayden Palmer of Chattanooga in the consolation second round, set to begin at 11 am Central / Noon Eastern on Friday.
