Women’s Hoops Drops Close Battle with Towson on Sunday

WASHINGTON – It was anyone's game when the score was knotted at 30-all at halftime, but the Towson Tigers were able to pull away late in the fourth quarter, just out of reach of the American University women's basketball team and hand the Eagles the 60-68 defeat.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Graduate student Lauren Stack lead the Eagles in scoring with 13 points, going 4-from-5 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the charity stripe. She also led the team in rebounding, picking up seven boards.
  • Stack also found herself in foul trouble in the final quarter of the game but still stayed out on the court for a total of 33 minutes.
  • Senior Kayla Henning went 5-for-7 from the field picking up 12 points to help the Eagles on offense.
  • Turnover and free-throws proved costly in the match up, with the Eagles turning the ball over 21 times to Towson. While only going 50% from behind the line, going 7-for-14, while Towson went 85% and grabbed 17 points from behind the stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American went 3-for-3 from the field to start the game to take the quick lead, 6-2.
  • Towson quickly responded to the Eagle's fast start by going on a 18-6 run for the rest of the quarter to give the Tigers an eight-point lead.
  • Anna LeMaster drained a three-point shot to start the seco quarter. LeMaster went 2-for-3 from behind the arc in the quarter to help give the Eagles energy on offense.
  • American defense held Towson scoreless for over two minutes in the second quarter, to allow the Eagles to go 4-from-5 from the field.
  • With four minutes left in the quarter, first-year Lexi Salazar drained a three-pointer to reduce the Tigers lead to only 2 points.
  • The Eagles went on a 6-0 run to close the half, and with seconds before the buzzer Emily Johns tied the game with a layup from Henning, to close the half 30-all.
  • Henning started the half with two back-to-back baskets from the field to give American the lead since the first minutes of the game.
  • With 6:42 left in the third quarter Molly Lavin hit a three-pointer to allow the Eagles to retake the lead, Salazar immediately followed by hitting another three to force Towson to call a timeout, 40-35.
  • Coming out of the timeout Towson responded by going on an 8-0 run.
  • Towson held American scoreless to start the fourth quarter to expand their lead, Lauren Stack picked up an and-one off a layup with a minute left in regulation to make it a four-point game. But the deficit proved to be too much to mount a comeback, with American falling 68-60.

American will finish its three-game homestand on Wednesday, December 20 at 12:30 p.m. when it takes on UMBC in Bender Arena as the last game before the winter break.
