Men’s Soccer Heads to Lafayette for Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer will head to Lafayette on Saturday for the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. American enters the tournament as the sixth seed while Lafayette enters as the third seed.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • American leads the all-time series 16-4-7.
  • The two squads have faced each other four times in the Patriot League Tournament, three times in the championship game and one time in the semifinals. Saturday's game will be the first time the two programs have ever met in in the quarterfinal round.
  • The Eagles are 2-2 when facing the Leopards in the postseason.
  • American and Lafayette battled to a 2-2 draw during the regular season.

  • American finished the 2023 regular season with a 6-5-4 overall record and a 3-3-3 mark in Patriot League play.
  • Junior Sam Hershey and senior Ethan Boyle lead the team in goals with six each. Junior Zemi Rodriguez leads the team in assists with five.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts has seen the most time in goal for American this season, playing in 11 games. He has 33 saves on the season and three shutouts.
  • The Eagles closed out the regular season with a 2-1 loss at Loyola Maryland.
  • American had seven student-athletes selected to the Patriot League Postseason All-League teams. Hershey, Rodriguez, and senior Mike Bleeker were named First Team honorees, junior Robbie Matei and Boyle were named Second Team honorees, and senior Evan Schweickert and senior Cooper Nunn were named Third Team honorees.  
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LAFAYETTE
  • Lafayette finished the 2023 regular season with an 8-5-5 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in Patriot League play.
  • Senior Hale Lombard leads the Leopards in goals with 10, while senior Benji Grossi leads the team in assists with four. Lombard also leads the league in goals, as well as shots (52) and shots on goal (25).
  • Junior goalkeeper Griffin Huff has been the Leopards primary goalkeeper this season. He has started in 12 of Lafayette's games, posting 0.58 goals against average and a 0.741 save percentage, while making 20 saves and recording seven shutouts. He leads the league in goals against average.
  • The Leopards closed out the regular season with a 0-0 draw with Navy.
  • Lafayette had four student-athletes selected to the Patriot League Postseason All-League teams. Lombard was named a First Team honoree, senior David Mizrahi was named a Second Team selection, and senior Carter Houilhan and Huff were named Third Team selections.
