Women's Basketball Squared off With Delaware in Back and Forth Battle

WASHINGTON Despite keeping the game close throughout a majority of the contest, the American University women's basketball team fell behind late in the third and ultimately dropped to the visiting University of Delaware Blue Hens, 68-58, Wednesday evening in Bender Arena.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Forwards Emily Johns and Lauren Stack led the Eagles offensively as the only American players in double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively. Both players also contributed with three rebounds and an assist each.  
  • Junior guard Bailey Garbee anchored the defense with a team-leading eight rebounds–a career high–in her second start of the season.
  • Senior Kayla Henning led the team with five assists, also recording two blocks.
  • Delaware was led by Tara Cousins, who put up 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and two assists to guide the Blue Hens to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • American and Delaware traded baskets to start the game. The teams found themselves tied at 10-all five minutes into the first quarter with neither team having led by more than two as the game got going.  
  • Despite running into turnover trouble offensively, with three in the last four minutes of the quarter, the Eagles kept the game tight with strong defense, outrebounding the Blue Hens 9-6 during the first quarter.  
  • Sophomore Molly Lavin knocked down a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the frame to give the Eagles a narrow 17-16 advantage after one frame of play.  
  • After being down three a little over three minutes into the second frame, the Eagles responded with a 6-0 run aided by a jumper from Henning to take a 27-24 lead with 4:39 left in the half.  
  • American couldn't capitalize on the run to start pulling further ahead, with Delaware going on a quick 9-2 run of its own to take a 33-29 lead into halftime. 
  • Johns was the first Eagle to reach double-digit scoring, getting a quick layup just six seconds into the half to pull American back within two.  
  • With the Blue Hens trying to pull ahead, the Eagles hung strong to keep Delaware to a three point, 44-41 lead with 3:04 left in the third quarter.  
  • However, American would be held scoreless the remainder of the frame, trailing 56-41 heading into the fourth.  
  • Another 6-0 American run was how the to start the final quarter pulled the Eagles back within nine with 7:52 left to play.
  • With Delaware in foul trouble, American made five of six free throws amidst an 8-0 run to find themselves down by only four with four minutes left in the game.  
  • Again, the Eagles couldn't capitalize on the sprout of momentum, with the Blue Hens pushing their league back to 10 and coming away with the victory in a final score of 68-58.
