RICHMOND, Va. – Lights out shooting from the Spiders saw the American University women's basketball team fall 44-76 to Richmond on Saturday evening on the road. The Eagles were led in scoring on the night by sophomore
Molly Lavin and senior
Ivy Bales.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lavin led in scoring for the Eagles on the night, with 14 points. The sophomore forward also had seven rebounds. Lavin was the only AU player to score in double digits and collected the most rebounds for the team.
- Senior guard Ivy Bales finished second in points and on the boards with six points and five rebounds.
- The Spiders were led by Siobhan Ryan and Rachel Ullstrom with 20 and 13 points, respectively. On the glass, Richmond was led by Addie Budnik with 11. Richmond shot 47% from the floor and 41% from three in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the third time this season, Anna LeMaster was the Eagle that started off the scoring with a triple for squad. Defensively, the Eagles held off the Spiders until the 6:40 mark of the first.
- Lavin followed LeMaster's three with one of her own, but Richmond went on a on a 10-0 run after that, leading 10-6, but they were stopped by Lavin grabbing an and-1 layup, which she converted on.
- It was all Richmond after that; the quarter ended with the Spiders up 22-10 thanks to shooting 67% from the field while holding the Eagles to 40.%.
- The half finished with Richmond shooting 58% from the field and 54% from three, holding American to just 27% and 18% respectively, to take charge of the game over AU and lead 41-24 going into the break.
- Lavin and Bales were the leaders for the Eagles in the first half, Lavin with eight points and Bales with six. Bales also had three rebounds, along with LeMaster, Lauren Stack and Emily Johns.
- Coming out of halftime, the Spiders were able to keep the Eagles from scoring until the 4:34 mark in the third frame when Riley DeRubbo joined in on the scoring with a long-range three. Meanwhile, RU had scored eight for themselves by then, holding onto their sizeable lead, 49-27.
- The game closed out much of the same, with Richmond keeping up the offensive pressure to hold onto their sizeable lead.
- The fourth quarter saw American take just nine points from their hosts while the Spiders managed to take control and claim the 76-44 win over the Eagles. While the Eagles managed to keep RU to their lowest score since they lost against Duke in their season opener, the Spiders were able to hold the Eagles to their lowest collection of points so far this season.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will be back in Bender Arena to take on George Mason on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. The Patriots will be AU's fourth Atlantic-10 conference opponent in a row this season.
