Championship Bound! Volleyball Sweeps Army in Dominant Patriot League Semifinal

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The quest for a 17th Patriot League Championship is now just one win away for American University volleyball after the third-seeded Eagles (20-10) dominated second-seeded Army West Point (14-12) in a three-set sweep by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-16. American will await the winner of the second semifinal between No. 1 Colgate vs. No. 4 Army, with that match set for 7 p.m.

The championship match will be contested at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19 at Colgate, regardless of the outcome in the second semifinal. The match will air live on ESPN+.

Notable
  • American has reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2019 season, which was the last time AU won the Patriot League title. It was the 16th in 19 years at the time, and the Eagles will now play for title No. 17 on Sunday.
  • The Black Knights had gotten the best of AU in both regular-season matches, but the Eagles got the job done when it counted most and there was little doubt the entire way.
  • Patriot League Player of the Year Zeynep Uzen posted her 13th double-double of the season with a match-high 14 kills to go with 10 digs, and she hit .306.
  • Freshman Holly Hopkins was a standout as well with 10 kills, six digs and two aces.
  • Graduate student Carlie Fikse and freshman Carly Sciborski tallied eight kills and seven kills, respectively, while also combining for five blocks.
  • Junior libero Bridget Javitch posted over 7.0 digs per set with a total of 22 in the match.
How it Happened
  • It was absolute domination for American in the opening set with 14 kills to Army's three, and a hitting percentage of .323 compared to -.111 for the Black Knights.
  • Hopkins and Uzen led the way with four kills each, while Fikse came up with three including the set-winner for the 25-11 win.
  • Army had its best hitting performance in the second, but was still no match for AU. The Eagles took a 12-6 lead and never looked back, getting seven kills from Uzen in a 2-16 win.
  • Once again, American never trailed in the third set and jumped out to an 8-2 lead that set the tone for the rest of the way.
  • The Eagles committed just three hitting errors in the final set compared to 10 for Army, and won 25-16 with the match-winner being an ace for Hopkins.
Next Up
  • American will await the winner of the second semifinal between No. 1 Colgate vs. No. 4 Army, with that match set for 7 p.m. The championship match will be contested at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19 at Colgate, regardless of the outcome in the second semifinal. The match will air live on ESPN+.
