Wrestling to Host Maryland in Season Opener on Thursday Night in Bender Arena

WASHINGTON - The new season begins for American University wrestling on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. as the Eagles host local rival Maryland in Bender Arena. Third-year head coach Jason Borrelli returns a familiar and more experienced lineup as AU looks to continue the turnaround that started last season.

Doja Cat Raffle
  • One lucky AU student fan at the dual will have the opportunity to win floor tickets to an upcoming Doja Cat concert.
  • Students will be able to enter the raffle between 6:45 and 7:15, and must stay to the conclusion of the match in order to have a chance to win.
  • The Doja Cat concert is set for Monday, Nov. 27 at Capital One Arena.
Inside the Series
  • American has only beaten Maryland once in 11 tries dating back to 2005.
  • Last year, the Terps won 29-10 in College Park.
  • AU's win came in 2005-06 at Maryland, 23-15.
What to Know about American
  • American is coming off a historic turnaround season in which the Eagles finished 8-12 in dual meets and racked up seven more wins than in a 1-12 finish the year before.
  • The eight wins matched the Eagles for the most dual victories in the last 12 years. AU has now recorded eight victories four times (2011-12, 2014-15, 2017-18, 2022-23) since going 14-7 in 2010-11.
  • American has only beaten Maryland once in 11 tries dating back to 2005. Last year, the Terps won 29-10 in College Park. AU's win came in 2005-06 at Maryland, 23-15.
  • Now a junior, Jack Maida qualified for the NCAA Championships as a sophomore last season after placing fifth at 133 lbs at the EIWA Championships. Maida earned a win at the national meet, pinning Jason Shaner of Oregon State in the consolation first round.
  • The Eagles had one of their best days in recent program history on January 22, 2023 as they earned three one-point victories to take the team title at the Chippewa Challenge. The three opponents—Central Michigan, CSU Bakersfield and Campbell—had all easily defeated AU the season before.
  • Overall, AU had 54 pins last season season which was 18 more than the total of 36 pins in the 2021-22 season.
  • Ranking third in NCAA Division I in total pins last season was Maximilian Leete at 125 lbs, who returns for his junior season now at 133 lbs. Leete has also cracked the top 10 all-time at AU, ranking in a tie for 10th with 17 career pins after just two years.
  • Leete led AU with 22 total wins in 2022-23 followed by Maida at 21 wins and Caleb Campos with 18 wins.
  • The Eagles have four captains in 2023-24. Graduate student Will Jarrell is serving in the role for third year in a row, graduate student Connor Bourne is a captain for a second straight year, and AU has two new captains in Maida and redshirt junior Jack Nies.
