Volleyball Downs Navy in Three Sets for Third Straight Win; Uzen Reaches 1,000 Career Digs

WASHINGTON - For the third match in a row, American University volleyball flipped the script on a team that had beaten them in the first half of the Patriot League season. This time, the Eagles took down Navy in straight sets by scores of 26-24, 25-12 and 25-11 behind a double-double of 18 kills and 11 digs from graduate student Zeynep Uzen.

By the Numbers
  • Uzen came into the match needing just three digs to reach 1,000 in her career, and achieved that number early in the opening set. She is now just the fourth player in the history of the program to reach both the 1,000-kill and 1,000-dig milestones.
  • The double-double was Uzen's sixth in a row, and her 12th of the season. She also hit an impressive .381 and served up a career-tying four aces.
  • Freshman Carly Sciborski hit .444 with eight kills and zero errors.
  • Junior Bridget Javitch led all players with 17 digs, and junior Esma Sipahi posted 29 assists, seven digs, two kills and two blocks.
  • The Eagles recorded seven team blocks to Navy's three, led by junior Lilou Stegeman with five blocks.
Notable
  • The only close set of the night was the first one, with seven ties and four lead changes.
  • After a 14-14 tie, Navy used a 6-2 run to take its largest lead of four points, 20-16, but AU quickly had it tied back up at 21-21.
  • Uzen set up the first set point with a kill for a 24-22 lead, but the Mids rallied back to tie it again. Finally, a Sipahi kill set up a third set point at 25-24, and Uzen ended it with her seventh kill of the match.
  • The Eagles posted 14 kills with zero errors in a dominant second set that saw them hit .560 to Navy's .103. The result was never in doubt once AU jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back.
  • The hitting was just as strong for AU in the third set with 13 kills and only a single error, while the Mids matched six kills to six errors. The Eagles served up four of their eight aces in the final set as they rolled to a 25-11 win.

Next Up
  • American will be on the road for the final time in the regular season to face Lehigh and Lafayette on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28.
