Turina Dellamaggiore’s Fourth Period Goal Lifts Field Hockey, 2-1, over Holy Cross on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – A slow first half followed by a vibrant second half that included three goals between the sides saw American University field hockey defeat Holy Cross 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The final home game of the regular season had Eagles goals from juniors Delia Rabatin and a game-winner coming from Federica Turina Dellamaggiore.

The Eagles will now enter the Patriot League Tournament with a share of the regular season title and as the No. 1 seed. As a result, they are set to host all three games of the tournament. The two semifinal games will be held on Thursday, November 2, and the Championship match up will be on Saturday, Nov. 4.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Rabatin got her second goal of the season for the Eagles. The junior's goal opened the scoring on the day with the only shot she took during the contest.
  • Turina Dellamaggiore earned her second goal of the season. The junior took 11 total shots, seven on goal, against the Crusaders.
  • By the final whistle, AU had earned 12 penalty corners to Holy Cross' two.
  • 10 cards across the board were issued and split evenly between the two sides, giving player-up advantages throughout the contest with six green cards and four yellow cards being presented.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a slow first half that saw only four shots from both sides, all of which taken by American.
  • In the second half, the dramatics started when the Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke in the 34th minute. The shot was taken by freshman Sarah Steinman, but Brooke Ross, the Lehigh keeper, was proving why she leads the league in total saves, shutouts, and saves per game. Ross saved the penalty stroke, and the teams were still knotted at nil-nil.
  • Three minutes later, in the 37th minute, AU found what it had been looking for when a beautiful counter attack by the Eagles finished with a goal off the stick of Rabatin.
  • The goal was assisted by first year Emma Guydish and American had the momentum, finishing the third period ahead 21-nil in shots and 5-nil in penalty corners. Despite the offensive dominance, the Crusaders were pushing, play shifting dramatically back and forth between the two sides. Holy Cross was unable to break through the American defensive line though.
  • Not backing down though, the Crusaders found an equalizer in the 47th minute. It was Megan Schienbein who scored, deflecting the ball into the net, off a penalty corner for Holy Cross, assisted by Sarah Potter.
  • Turina Dellamaggiore found the back of the net, on an AU penalty corner to give the Eagles back the lead. The junior's goal was rocketed past Ross and the Holy Cross defenders crowded in front of the goal off a pass from Kaleigh Missimer. The Eagles led, 2-1 with 11 minutes left to play in the contest.
  • The score line would stand and American would win 2-1 on Senior Day. The Eagles outshot the Crusaders 28-1 in shots, and 17-1 in shots on goal by the time the final whistle blew.
  • American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood only had to make one save throughout the 60 minutes of play.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will be on the road for their final game of the regular season, taking on Boston University on Saturday, October 28 at noon.
