WASHINGTON - In a five-set thriller, American University volleyball prevailed to take down Patriot League leader Colgate on Sunday afternoon in Bender Arena. The Eagles handed the Raiders their first PL loss of the season, and beat Colgate for the first time since 2019 in winning by scores of 25-16, 25-23, 20-25, 25-27 and 15-12.
By the Numbers
- Two 20-kill performances led the way for AU, as sophomore Adelina Berisha posted a career-high 22 kills and graduate student Zeynep Uzen had 21.
- Uzen made it her fourth straight double-double and 10th of the season as she tallied 12 digs. Most impressively, Uzen hit .385 and committed only a single attacking error in the match.
- With 16 total blocks, American tied its season high, and got a career-high 11 blocks from graduate student Carlie Fikse.
- Junior Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 22 digs, and senior Rachael Bennett also contributed double figures in digs with 10
- Another double-double came from junior Esma Sipahi with 53 assists and 12 digs, along with three aces.
Notable
- American hit .268 to Colgate's .195, and had an incredible second set with 16 kills and one error on its way to hitting .405.
- The opening set was close early on, but after a 7-7 tie the Eagles began to pull ahead.
- Bennett served out five points of a 6-0 run that put American up 19-10, and Colgate did not come within fewer than eight points the rest of the way.
- An exciting second set saw 19 ties and six lead changes, with neither team ever leading by more than two points.
- After a final tie at 23-23, Uzen knocked down back-to-back kills for the 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
- The Eagles lost momentum midway through the third set, as Colgate pulled ahead after a 15-15 tie and ultimately took the set 25-20.
- AU then trailed by seven on a few occasions in the fourth set before rallying down the stretch. The Eagles tied it up at 20-20 and then five more times before an attack error on AU and a Colgate block gave the Raiders an extra-points win at 27-25.
- The Eagles were the aggressor in the fifth set, usually taking the lead before Colgate would get the next point to tie.
- AU trailed 11-10 before closing out the match on a 5-1 run that included two kills from Berisha.

- The Eagles will be back at home next weekend, taking on Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, and Navy at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.
