Women’s Basketball Wins, Charges Past Navy in Final Frame

WASHINGTON – Freshmen Molly Lavin and Laura Nogues combined for 14 points in the final frame to lift the Eagles of the American women's basketball team (5-16, 4-6 PL) over the Mids of Navy (1-20, 1-9 PL), 62-55. At the half, the Eagles were down 10 and came out of the break with purpose, taking the lead with eight minutes left to play and never relinquishing it.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Emily Johns finished the afternoon with 16 points, going 6-9 from the field. She also grabbed four rebounds.
  • Nogues had a career high game with 11 points. The freshman from Sabadell, Spain went 4-6 from the field and had a steal that led to a three-point basket from Lavin.
  • Ivy Bales led in rebounding, grabbing six boards.
  • The Mids were led by Lindsay Llewellyn with 14 points. Llewellyn also had five rebounds. On the boards, Morganne Andrews led with 17 rebounds. Andrews also had four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started with Lauren Stack winning the tip and the first basket going to Johns with the assist from Stetson and the back and forth was on, each team hanging with the other.
  • At the media timeout, with 4:29 left in the first period, American led Navy by two, 10-8. They Eagles shooting 50% from the field to Navy's 44%.
  • Coming out of the timeout the game swung Navy's way, the Mids leading 22-14 at though one. Navy had the 9-6 advantage in rebounds at this point, as well as an eight-point advantage off American turnovers.
  • The game slowed down after the first period, the second starting out with the teams each only scoring four points apiece midway through the frame, but Navy was shooting 53% to American's 39%, leading 18-22.
  • At the break, the Eagles were down 10, the score line reading 24-34. The Mids still had a rebound advantage, 20-12, and they were shooting 46% from the field to the Eagles' 32%. Johns led for AU with 7 points while Stack led on the boards with four.
  • The third period saw the intensity of the game pick up, particularly when Nogues got a steal and Lavin got a triple to put the Eagles down five, 33-38.
  • Coming out of the media timeout after Lavin's basket, the Eagles kept pushing. Bales and LeMaster getting big steals to give AU crucial possessions as time in the third wound down.
  • Two free-throws from Johns at the charity stripe had the game tied up 38-38 after a 14-4 run by the Eagles.
  • With 8:05 left to play, Nogues had a driving layup that saw the Eagles take a 45-44 lead, igniting the Eagles offensively.
  • After that, the American didn't trail the rest of the game. It was a collective effort in the final frame, five Eagles scoring both from the floor and the free-throw line to lead the charge.
  • In the end, American outscored the Navy 22-11 in the final frame to win the conference matchup 62-55.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will be back on the road to New York to take on Colgate on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.
After that, American will host Boston University in Bender Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 11:30 a.m.
