Men’s Basketball Battles Colgate to Final Seconds; Falls 62-61

HAMILTON, N.Y. – American University men's basketball (12-7, 4-4, PL) took Colgate University (14-7, 8-0 PL) down to the final seconds on Saturday afternoon, nearly knocking off the first place Raiders on Catterell Court. Led by junior Colin Smalls with 15 points, American led for most of the game but could not hang on as Colgate picked up the weekend win.  
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Smalls shot nearly 100 percent, going 4-for-5 from the field, a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe.
  • The Eagles held Colgate to just 62 points, the least amount of points scored by the Raiders in league action so far this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate won the tip but American jumped out to an early 8-4 lead.
  • The Raiders then went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead before a dunk by junior Matt Rogers evened the game at 10-10.
  • The two sides traded baskets until the score stood at 14-14. Senior Jaxon Knotek broke the tie to give American a 17-14 lead with 12:56 left in the half.
  • The Eagles then took a 22-19 lead and held the lead until with 1:54 left in the half, a shot from beyond the arc by the Raiders gave them the 30-29 lead.
  • Freshman Geoff Sprouse put in a layup to put American back in the lead, 31-30, but two good shots from the charity stripe with 15 seconds left in the half sent the game into halftime with Colgate holding a 32-31 lead.
  • Colgate took a 34-31 lead to start the second half before junior Matt Rogers put in a jumper to pull American within one.
  • The two sides battled back and forth, trading the lead until with the score 41-39, in favor of Colgate, a three-point shot from Smalls put American back in the lead by one.  
  • A foul by the Raiders then sent Smalls to the line. He made his extra shot, followed up by a three-point basket from graduate student Connor Nelson, to give American a 51-44 lead.
  • A few minutes later with the score 53-48, a 5-0 run by the home team tied the game at 58-58.
  • The Eagles went on a 3-0 run to break the tie and put themselves back in the lead with just over three minutes to play in the game.
  • Colgate put in a layup to pull themselves within one, 61-60, and then made two shots from the charity stripe to take the lead and secure the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field, 45 percent from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent from charity stripe.
  • American held the 7-2 block advantage.
  • Colgate held the 18-17 assists advantage and the 18-17 steals advantage.  
  • Junior Johnny O'Neil and junior Matt Rogers led the Eagles in rebounds with five each.  
  • The Eagles and Raiders were even in points the second half each scoring 30.
