WASHINGTON – Led by junior
Johnny O'Neil's season-high 21 points, American University men's basketball (10-3, 2-0 PL) defeated Loyola Maryland (5-10, 0-2 PL), 71-55, in Bender Arena to open up its home league slate. It was the Eagles' 10th win of the season and their second straight league win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After winning the tip, American opened the game with a 7-0 run sparked by O'Neil who had the Eagles' first five points of the game.
- The Greyhounds responded by going on a 5-0 run of their own, closing the gap between the teams to just two points with 15:50 left to play in the half.
- After a three-minute scoring drought from both sides, an American foul sent Loyola to the for two extra shots. Both shots were made to end the drought and pull the Greyhounds within five, 16-11.
- Loyola put in a jump shot as the buzzer signaled the end of the half, sending the teams into the locker room with American leading by 15 points, 37-22.
- A 16-4 run by the Eagles in the second half gave them their largest lead of the game, a 62-41, with 6:59 left to play in the game.
- The two sides traded points until Loyola pulled within 12 of American with 4:36 left in the game.
- Freshman Geoff Sprouse hit a three-pointer with less than five minutes to go in the game, giving the Eagles a spark to close out the game with a 6-0 run to secure the win over the Greyhounds.
