Volleyball Wins 3-1 at Coppin State to Remain Undefeated

BALTIMORE - Previous career highs were shattered as American University volleyball got strong performances from numerouus players in a 3-1 victory at Coppin State on Tuesday night. The Eagles lost the first set 25-19 before winning the next three 25-22, 25-11 and 25-20. They remain undefeated at 6-0 this season, while Coppin State drops to 2-6.

NOTABLE
  • Defensively, five AU players reached double figures in digs, led by senior Rachael Bennett with a career-high of 31 and senior Inbal Peleg with a career-high 20 digs to go with 41 assists for a double-double.
  • Also notching a double-double, her third of the season, was senior Zeynep Uzen with a match-high and season-high 22 kills to go with 13 digs.
  • Grad student Carlie Fikse hit .484 with a career-high 16 kills, and freshman Adelina Berisha also tallied 16 kills which is her season best.
  • Junior Maya Mrus and sophomore Bridget Javitch posted 15 and 11 digs, respectively, with 11 being a career-high for Javitch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AU never quite recovered from a shaky start in set one, eventually falling well behind at 22-14. They used a 4-0 run to make it interesting at 22-18 but weren't able to come any closer.
  • The second set was the tightest of the four with six ties and two lead changes. The Coppin State Eagles hit a higher percentage than the AU Eagles at .282 to .255, but American knocked down 20 kills to Coppin State's 13.
  • AU needed a gut check, down 21-18, but the Eagles found it and closed out the set with a 7-1 run that included three kills from Berisha and two from Uzen.
  • The Eagles cruised easily in the third set, out-hitting Coppin State .433 to .100 and never trailing in the 25-11 win as Uzen posted seven kills and Fikse posted six.
  • In the fourth set, American pulled well ahead at 16-6 and kept a strong lead the rest of the way.
  • Closing out did prove difficult, however, as Coppin State fought off five match points before an Uzen kill finally ended it in the Eagles' favor.
NEXT UP
  • The Panther Challenge awaits AU as the Eagles head to Pitt for a weekend tournament. First up is #7 Pitt at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, followed by Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and Towson at 4 p.m., both on Saturday.
