Julia Kato Records Third Clean Sheet; Eagles Battle to 0-0 Draw at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The American University women's soccer team (1-1-3, 0-0-0 PL) battled to a 0-0 draw with William and Mary (2-3-1, 0-0-0 CAA) on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va. Sophomore Julia Kato picked up her third clean sheet of the season in the tie as the Eagles move to 1-1-3 overall heading into their final nonconference test on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Old Dominion University. 
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sunday's 0-0 draw marks only the second time the two programs have battled to a tie. The last time was on Sept. 30, 1992 in Washington, D.C. with a 1-1 final score.  
  • The Eagles have now recorded two scoreless draws in a row, after battling to a 0-0 draw with George Washington University on Wednesday in their season home opener.
  • Kato has now recorded three clean sheets this season, bringing her career total to six. Through the Eagles five games this season, she has already tied her season-high three clean sheets from last season.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American had the first chance to score four minutes into the game off a corner kick taken by junior Izzy Kadzban, but the ball went wide. 
  • William & Mary had its first chance seven minutes into the game off a corner kick, but the Eagles defense kept the game scoreless.
  • The Eagle's offense countered with back-to-back shots by senior Cailin Panacek and sophomore Olivia Simmons. Neither found a way past the Tribe's defense and the game remained scoreless. 
  • Senior Fisayo Iluyomade had a great shot for the Eagles in the 26th minute but the ball hit the crossbar. 
  • Each side totaled one more shot each in the first half, with neither team finding the back of the net to send the game into the second half tied 0-0.
  • The Eagles had the first chance of the season half, sending the ball high and over the top of the net off a corner kick, keeping the game scoreless.
  • The home team had a good series of chances to take the lead late in the game but the first shot went to the left of the net and the second was saved by the Eagles. 
  • The Tribe took one last shot with less than a minute to play, sending the ball over the top of the net to secure the 0-0 draw.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American outshoot William & Mary 4-2 in the first half while the Tribe held the 9-2 advantage in the second half and 11-6 advantage overall.
  • The Tribe held the 5-3 overall corner kick advantage.
  • Kato, senior Natalie Oliver, sophomore Giuliana Capraro and freshman Eliza Fisher all played all 90 minutes of Sunday's game.  
 
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will have the rest of the week off before traveling to Norfolk, Va. on Sept. 11 for a Sunday night matchup with Old Dominion University for their final nonconference game of the season. American is 2-6-2 against ODU. 
  • They will then open Patriot League action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Holy Cross.
