Second Half Goals Lift Women’s Soccer to Draw with Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Down 1-0, the American University women's soccer team (1-1-4, 0-0-0 PL) netted two goals with 16 minutes left in the game to earn a 2-2 tie with Old Dominion (2-4-1, 0-0-0 Sun Belt). The Eagles' goals came from senior Cailin Panacek in the 74th minute to equalize the game 1-1, and from senior Alysa Vazquez in the 86th minute to put the game at 2-2 after an 81st minute goal by Old Dominion.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sunday's game marks the third straight tie by the Eagles to move their record to 1-1-4.
  • Panacek's goal was her first career goal.
  • Vazquez's goal was her first of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Sunday's tie marks the first time the Eagles have not dropped a game to the Monarchs since 2001 when the two programs battled to a 1-1 overtime draw in Washington, D.C. Sunday's game also marks the first time the Eagles have not lost in Norfolk since 1994.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Kato recorded a season-high six saves. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Old Dominion notched the first shot of the game in the fifth minute, but Kato made the save to keep the game 0-0.
  • A few minutes later graduate student Asia Horne had the first shot of the game for the Eagles, sending the ball out and to the right of the goal keeping the game tied at zero.
  • The Monarchs scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Brooke Steel had the Eagles last chance of the half to equalize but her shot went over the top of the goal to send the game into halftime with the Monarchs up 1-0.
  • ODU got two quick shots off in the first few minutes of the second half to try to extend the lead but both went over the top of the goal.
  • Vazquez and senior Fisayo Iluyomade followed up the Monarchs shots with shots of their own. Vazquez's was saved by the Monarch's goalkeeper and Iluyomade's went out wide and to the left.  
  • Panacek netted the equalizer in the 74th minute off a deep free kick that sailed over the top of ODU's goalkeeper's head and into the top right corner of the net.
  • ODU answered with a goal seven minutes later in the 81st minute to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Seven minutes later it was Vazquez who netted the Eagles' second equalizer of the game, putting the ball in on a rebound by ODU's goalkeeper after saving a shot by senior Sylvie Prepetit. The goal came in the 86th minute.
  • ODU fired off two more shots in the final minute of the game but neither found a way passed the Eagles' defense as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • ODU lead American in shots 16-12. The Monarchs outshot the Eagles in the first half 6-2 and both squads totaled 10 shots in the second half.
  • Four yellow cards were handed out in Sunday's game with two being handed to the Eagles and two being handed out to the Monarchs.
  • Vazquez lead the Eagles in shots with four, junior Abby Dillon and Prepetit each recorded two, and Panacek, Horne, freshman Avery Klingensmith and Iluyomade each recorded one. 
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles now turn their attention to Saturday as they are set to open up Patriot League play at Holy Cross. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start.
  • They will then return home on Wednesday, Sept. 21 for a 4 p.m. game against Bucknell.
