#21 Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Contest to Old Dominion

WASHINGTON – The #21 American University field hockey team (2-2) battled to the bitter end against #19 Old Dominion (3-1) on Sunday afternoon at Jacobs Complex. Despite senior Charllene Boshoff's goal tying it all up at 1-1 with seven minutes left to play, the Monarchs managed a second goal in the 56th minute to claim the match 2-1.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood tallied seven saves for the game to bring her season total up to 30.
  • With her assist on Boshoff's goal, freshman Lotta Curanz's earned first collegiate assist; she scored her first goal against Central Michigan in August.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Old Dominion broke through at the end of the first quarter off a direct corner to take the lead and would hold onto that 1-0 lead until late in the fourth period.
  • In the 53rd minute, Curanz took a corner that was controlled by Boshoff and then slammed into the back of the goal by the senior defender. The game was tied at 1-all.
  • The Monarchs struck back though just three minutes later, scoring another goal that would be enough to win the battle of the afternoon 2-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Old Dominion racked up two green cards and two yellow cards in the contest while American got two green cards. At one point late in the second period, American was playing with a two-athlete advantage for four minutes.
  • The Monarchs out-shot the Eagles 17(9)-6(3) and American had seven saves to Old Dominion's two.
  • The Monarchs took 11 penalty corners while the Eagles took four.
  • This was Boshoff's first goal since she scored against Lafayette in the Patriot League Championship in the fall of 2021.
