Men's Soccer Welcomes Loyola for a Patriot League Championship Rematch Wednesday

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer welcomes the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds for a Wednesday midweek matchup and a rematch of last season's Patriot League Championship game. Both teams enter the game with a 3-3-2 record and a 1-1 mark in Patriot League play.

  • Loyola Maryland leads the all-time series 17-29-6 dating back to 1949.
  • American's last win over the Greyhounds was on April 14, 2021 in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals in Baltimore, Md., 3-2. That year the Eagles' went on to win the Patriot League Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
  • The last win for American at Reeves was Oct. 29, 2014 by a 1-0 final score.
  • Over the last five meetings, the all-time series stands at 2-2-1.
  • The last matchup between the Eagles and Greyhounds was in last season's Patriot League Championship game in Baltimore, Md. on Nov. 13, 2021. Loyola Maryland won the meeting 2-1 to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
 
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American enters Wednesday's game with a 3-3-2 overall record and a 1-1 record in Patriot League play.
  • The Eagles are coming off a 2-1 win over Bucknell on Saturday in their Patriot League home opener. Junior Evan Schweickert and senior Jack Green netted American's goals in the win with Schweickert's coming in the 43rd minute and Green's game-winner coming in the 73rd minute. Green also notched an assist in the game, assisting on Schweickert's goal. Freshman Troy Elgersma had the assist on Green's game-winning goal.
  • Schweickert and Elgersma were named the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week and Patriot League Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their efforts in Saturday's game.
  • Three Eagles lead the team in goals. Schweickert, junior Robbie Matei and sophomore Zemi Rodriguez each have netted two so far this season. Senior Mattias Cooper and Elgersma lead the team in assists with two each.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts made his first collegiate start on Saturday and picked up his first win. The freshman recorded two saves in the win.
 
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LOYOLA MARYLAND
  • The Greyhounds enter Wednesday's game with a 3-3-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Patriot League play. Their one league win so far this season has come over Lehigh by a 1-0 final score.
  • Senior defender Matthew Lala was named the Patriot League Defender of the Week on Monday. He played all 90 minutes in both of the Greyhounds games last week and recorded his first goal of the season, which was also the game-winner, in Loyola's 1-0 win over Lehigh.
  • Of the Greyhounds 35 student-athletes on their roster, 18 are underclassmen.
  • Loyola is outshooting opponents 102-76 so far this season, putting 32 of those shots on goal.

  • At Wednesday's game, all fans are encouraged to stop by and visit with some of the AU student clubs that are celebrating the month with us including: Latinos En Acción, AU LULAC, and the Puerto Rican Student Organization.  The clubs will have tables set up on the track surrounding Reeves Field, so come and interact and learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month with these student-led organizations.
