WASHINGTON – In what proved to be a defensive battle until the final 20 minutes of the game, American University women's soccer (1-2-5, 0-1-1 PL) dropped its Patriot League home opener, 1-0, on Wednesday to the Bucknell University Bison (4-4-1, 1-1 PL) at Reeves Field.
QUICK NOTABLES
- The loss was just the Eagles' second loss of the season. Their last loss came on Aug. 18 against Elon, 3-0, to open up their 2022 slate.
- Sophomore Julia Kato, graduate student Asia Horne and sophomore Giuliana Capraro played all 90 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bucknell took the first shot of the game in the 8th minute, sending the ball low for Kato to grab and make the save.
- Senior Natalie Oliver had the first shot of the game for the Eagles' in the 22nd minute.
- Senior Fisayo Iluyomade had back-to-back shots in the 26th minute to try to put American on the board, but her first shot was stopped by Bucknell's goalkeeper and her second shot went high and to the right.
- Bucknell took one more shot in the first half but neither team found the back of the net to send the game to into halftime 0-0.
- Senior Ashley Molz had the first chance for either team in the second half to put a tally on the board but her shot went into the hands of Bucknell's goalkeeper, keeping the game scoreless.
- Bucknell's senior Abby Gearheart found the back of the net in the 80th minute to give the Bison the lead and the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Iluyomade had a team-leading two shots.
- Two yellow cards were handed out in the game, both to the Eagles.
- There were only nine shots take in the game. Bucknell just edged American in shots, outshooting the Eagles 5-4. Of those nine shots, seven were on goal. Bucknell held the 4-3 shots on goal advantage.
UP NEXT
- American will remain at home for its next game on Sunday, Sept. 25 against Lafayette. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start.
- Sunday is the team's Youth Soccer Day and will be hosting a free postgame kid's skills clinic to all children 8th grade and younger.
- The Eagles will then travel to Army on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. game with the Black Knights.
