WASHINGTON – American University women's soccer (1-1-2, 0-0-0 PL) battled to a gritty 0-0 draw with crosstown rival George Washington (1-0-3, 0-0-0 A-10) Wednesday night at Reeves in the Eagles' 2022 season home opener.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore Julia Kato recorded her second shutout of the season. Wednesday's game also marks her second-straight clean sheet as she shutout South Florida last Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Washington took the first two shots of the game but both were scooped up by Kato.
  • Senior Fisayo Iluyomade took American's first shot of the game at the 15-minute mark in the first half but George Washington's goalkeeper made the save to keep the game 0-0.
  • The Eagles had a chance with seven minutes left in the first half, off a shot by senior Abby Dillon to head into halftime with the lead, but once again GW's goalkeeper made the save to send the game into halftime with no score.
  • George Washington earned the first corner kick of the game in the 52nd minute, putting the ball in front of the goal, but American's defense held strong and took the ball back down to the other end of the field.
  • Both side's defenses held strong through the rest of the second half, allowing each offense to take just one shot in the second half.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • George Washington just barely edged the Eagles in shots, 4-3.
  • American had no corner kicks in the 90 minutes while GW had three.
