Robbie Matei's Goal Lifts Eagles to 1-0 Victory Over Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Robbie Matei's goal in the 45th minute, off a corner kick from senior Mattias Cooper, was all American (1-0-1, 0-0-0 PL) needed to secure the 1-0 victory over Old Dominion (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Sun Belt) Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. The win marked the Eagles' first of the season and the first in Norfolk for the program since 1997.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sunday's win was the first in Norfolk for the Eagles since 1997. That season the Eagles also shutout the Monarchs by a 2-0 final.
  • Through their two games so far this season the Eagles have allowed no goals, giving junior Lorenzo Gordon his first two career clean sheets.
  • Freshman Jonah Fogel saw his first collegiate action on Sunday, coming in for nine minutes and recording one shot.
  • Matei's goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career. The goal was also the Eagles first of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Old Dominion had the first shot of the game seven minutes in, but the shot was just off the mark and was saved by Gordon to keep the score 0-0.
  • Matei had Americans first shot of the game a few seconds later but the Monarchs goalkeeper made the save to keep the game tied at zero.
  • Each side fired off one more shot in the first half but neither found a way past the opposing sides goalkeeper to send the game into halftime still tied 0-0.
  • 43 seconds into the second half, Matei found the back of the net for the Eagles, off a corner kick by Cooper, to give American the 1-0 lead.
  • Matei had another chance to put the ball in the back of the net in the 59th minute but ODU's goalkeeper made the save.
  • The Eagles then had back-to-back opportunities in the 77th minute, off shots by senior Nevin Baer and junior Evan Schweickert but both attempts were scooped up by the Monarch's keeper.
  • The home team made one last attempt to even the score in the 80th minute but couldn't get passed Gordon as the Eagles secured the 1-0 victory.
