Robbie Matei's goal in the 45
th minute, off a corner kick from senior
Mattias Cooper, was all American (1-0-1, 0-0-0 PL) needed to secure the 1-0 victory over Old Dominion (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Sun Belt) Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. The win marked the Eagles' first of the season and the first in Norfolk for the program since 1997.
QUICK NOTABLES
- Sunday's win was the first in Norfolk for the Eagles since 1997. That season the Eagles also shutout the Monarchs by a 2-0 final.
- Through their two games so far this season the Eagles have allowed no goals, giving junior Lorenzo Gordon his first two career clean sheets.
- Freshman Jonah Fogel saw his first collegiate action on Sunday, coming in for nine minutes and recording one shot.
- Matei's goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career. The goal was also the Eagles first of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Old Dominion had the first shot of the game seven minutes in, but the shot was just off the mark and was saved by Gordon to keep the score 0-0.
- Matei had Americans first shot of the game a few seconds later but the Monarchs goalkeeper made the save to keep the game tied at zero.
- Each side fired off one more shot in the first half but neither found a way past the opposing sides goalkeeper to send the game into halftime still tied 0-0.
- 43 seconds into the second half, Matei found the back of the net for the Eagles, off a corner kick by Cooper, to give American the 1-0 lead.
- Matei had another chance to put the ball in the back of the net in the 59th minute but ODU's goalkeeper made the save.
- The Eagles then had back-to-back opportunities in the 77th minute, off shots by senior Nevin Baer and junior Evan Schweickert but both attempts were scooped up by the Monarch's keeper.
- The home team made one last attempt to even the score in the 80th minute but couldn't get passed Gordon as the Eagles secured the 1-0 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Old Dominion outshoot American 12-10 but the Eagles totaled eight shots on goal to the Monarchs four.
- Four yellow cards were handed out in the second half, three to ODU and one to American.
- The Eagles held the 4-2 corner kick advantage.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles return home on Friday, Sept. 2 when they welcome George Mason to Reeves. Kick-off is slated for 4 p.m.
