Second Straight Sweep for Volleyball as the Eagles Defeat George Mason

WASHINGTON - For a second straight match, American University volleyball took care of business and swept its opponent, beating George Mason in three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-22. It was the 799th career victory for head coach Barry Goldberg, who will go for number 800 when the Eagles host George Washington on Saturday night in the 14th annual Bender Blue Out at 7 p.m.

NOTABLE
  • Senior Zeynep Uzen once again led the way for AU, totaling 13 kills and seven digs.
  • For a second time in as many career matches, freshman Adelina Berisha posted nine kills while also tallying three blocks.
  • As a team, the Eagles recorded 10 blocks compared to just one for Mason. Graduate student Carlie Fikse was the leader with six blocks including two solo blocks.
  • Sophomore Bridget Javitch led AU with a career-high 10 digs, and junior Maya Mrus served up an impressive three aces with zero errors.
  • Senior libero Rachael Bennett recorded nine digs, and senior Inbal Peleg had eight digs to go with a match-high 28 assists.
  • In her second match back from injury since 2019, senior Onuchi Ndee posted four blocks and four kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was the tightest of the three throughout, tied six times overall. After the final tie at 20-20, Uzen took charge. She finished the set with nine kills including one for the winning point at 25-22.
  • American had little trouble in the second set, pulling away halfway through on a solo block followed by a kill for Fikse.
  • Fikse's fifth kill of the match gave AU set point at 24-18, and it was followed by a block for Ndee and Esma Sipahi.
  • The Eagles gave Mason some hope in the third set after an 11-3 run for the Patriots put them ahead 11-6.
  • AU chipped away and later tied things up at 17-17. Berisha was outstanding in the final set with five kills, helping the Eagles get a 22-18 cushion they would need down the stretch.
  • After an ace for Mrus made it 24-19, the Patriots rattled off three straight points before an Uzen kill survived a challenged and the match ended in straight sets.
