Wrestling's Jack Maida Advances to Day Two of the EIWA Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman Jack Maida will wrestle on day two of the 2022 EIWA Championships, with a chance to finish as high as third place at 133 pounds. It was a tough day one overall for American University wrestling, and the Eagles will throw their support behind Maida as the only remaining competitor.

Notable
  • Maida lost to Princeton's Nick Kayal to start the day, but recovered well. Behind two takedowns and a reversal, he secured a 9-1 major decision victory vs. Kaelen Francois of LIU in his first consolation bracket match.
  • Maida was part of a wild finish in his second consolation bracket match of the day against Bucknell's Kurt Phipps. The two went to sudden victory tied at 3-3, and despite an apparent Maida takedown, Phipps was awarded a takedown just seconds later.
  • Coach Jason Borrelli threw the challenge brick and was successful, getting the decision reversed. Bucknell coaches tried to challenge the challenge, but the call stood and Maida was the winner, advancing to Sunday morning's consolation round of 4.The Eagles had just one wrestler come out victorious in the round of 16, as heavyweight Isaac Righter scored three takedowns against Navy's Ryan Catka before pinning Catka in the third period.
  • Righter later lost to Hofstra's Zach Knighton-Ward for a second time this season, and was AU's final wrestler of the night in the consolation round of 8.
  • Righter came up against Princeton's Matt Cover in the late bout, and was pinned by Cover in 1:06 to end his EIWA run.
  • Max Leete (125) suffered a one-point loss to Franklin & Marshall's Gio Diaz in the round of 16, but came back with a vengeance in the second session and promptly pinned Hofstra's Jacob Moon in 42 seconds.
  • Ethan Szerencsits, who lost Sacred Heart's Jordan Carlucci earlier this season, started his day strong in a pigtail match at 141 pounds with a win by fall over Carlucci in 2:27.
  • By the end of the day, Szerenscits saw his EIWA run come to an end with back-to-back losses vs. Columbia and Princeton.
  • Facing a must-win in the consolation bracket after a loss at 149 in the round of 16, Patrick Ryan took out Hofstra's Michael Leandrou, a former teammate, for the second time this season. In Ryan's second consolation match, his EIWA run ended with a 6-3 loss to Columbia's Danny Fongaro.
  • Tim Fitzpatrick (174) also wrestled in the consolation bracket after a round of 16 loss to Army's Ben Pasiuk, 8-5. Fitzpatrick came out strong in session two and beat Bucknell's Sam Barnes by 8-2 decision with three takedowns.
  • Ultimately, the day ended in heartbreak for Fitzpatrick, a 2021 NCAA qualifier, as he lost 3-1 in sudden victory to Binghamton's Jacob Nolan.
  • After day one, the Eagles stand in 15th place among the 17 teams in the EIWA.
