Lacrosse Wins Patriot League Opener at Lafayette, 13-9, Behind Career High Performances

EASTON, Pa. – Three Eagles tied career highs, two of those set just one game ago, in leading American University lacrosse to a 13-9 win in its Patriot League opener at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. It was the fourth straight win for AU, who never trailed in the contest.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Senior Stefanie Walsh, who scored a career-high six goals last week in AU's win at ODU, tied that number in the PL opener with another six goals to lead the Eagles. Walsh added one assist at Lafayette to set a new career high of seven total points.
  • Three of Walsh's goals were scored on free-position attempts, where she went 3-for-3.
  • Sophomore transfer Mary Alice Collins, also coming off a career performance at ODU, tied her career high with 16 saves to get the win in the cage. She made 11 saves in the first half alone.
  • Freshman Maddy Spratt added a pair of goals along with one assist.
  • The Eagles got one goal each from Becca Frank, Kendall Goldblum, Emma Vinall and Alyssa Apuzzo and Katie Pierce
  • American dominated on the draw with 18 draw controls to Lafayette's eight.
  • Vinall tied her career high with an incredible 13 draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American got on the board first as Walsh scored two minutes in.
  • After Lafayette tied it up, Walsh scored again to start a 3-0 run that had AU with a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. Five of Collins' saves came in the opening quarter as the Eagles held the Leopards to a single goal.
  • Lafayette found some momentum in the second quarter to tie it up again at 4-4 with 5:54 left, but Walsh soon completed the hat trick for a 5-4 lead.
  • With just 34 seconds left in the opening half, Frank gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead that they took into halftime.
  • One minute into the second half, Lafayette tied the score for a final time at 6-6, but the Leopards would not score again until the fourth quarter.
  • Meanwhile, American rattled off five straight goals and had an 11-6 lead early in the final quarter.
  • Walsh got her sixth goal and third free-position goal with 8:50 remaining for a 13-7 lead. It would be the last goal for the Eagles, but Lafayette was only able to cut the deficit by two the rest of the way.
