WASHINGTON – A strong start and a better finish propelled American University lacrosse to its third straight win on Sunday afternoon as the Eagles topped Old Dominion on the road, 17-13.
The Eagles enter Patriot League play with a 5-3 mark and have won five of their last six games.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Stefanie Walsh scored a career-high six goals to lead the American attack.
- Rookie Becca Frank found the back of the net three times, which is also a career high.
- Mary Alice Collins withstood an ODU offense that generated 39 shots, including 11 free position shots. Collins was up to the task and made a career-high 16 saves between the pipes.
- Kendall Goldblum scored two goals and matched a season-high with three assists to finish with five points. Goldblum has scored a goal in every game this season.
- Emma Vinall, Katie Pierce, and Emma Hare rounded out the scoring with two goals apiece.
- Vinall added two assists while Maddy Spratt finished with three assists.
- American scored 17 goals on 24 shots. 23 of those shots were on goal.
- AU's defense caused 12 turnovers compared to seven for ODU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American got on the board first as Vinall scored just 24 seconds into the contest.
- ODU responded less than two minutes later with a goal of its own, but AU rattled off six unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead after one quarter.
- In the second quarter, Pierce's second tally of the day pushed AU to a 10-4 lead with 6:51 left in the half.
- The Monarchs closed the half with three goals in the final 1:41 and AU went into the break with a 10-7 lead.
- Two more ODU goals early in the third quarter cut the deficit to one with 9:33 left in the frame.
- Walsh scored back-to-back goals in the middle of the third quarter to stop ODU's run.
- After three quarters of action, AU was clinging to a 12-11 lead.
- Three straight goals from the Eagles gave AU some breathing room early in the fourth quarter.
- ODU was only able to score twice in the final frame and American secured the 17-13 victory.
NEXT UP
The Eagles will open Patriot League play at Lafayette on Saturday, March 19, before returning home to host Holy Cross at noon on Saturday, March 26.
