WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team dropped to the hot hand of Colgate on Saturday, 74-60.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Emily Johns paced the Eagles for the second consecutive game, scoring 16 to just miss tying her career-high from Tuesday's win over Lafayette.Â
- Senior Taylor Brown also closed in double-figures with 14 points while senior Jade Edwards and freshman Bailey Garbee led on the boards with five rebounds each. Edwards also pitched in a team-high six assists.
- The Raiders were led by a 23-point performance from Alexa Brodie. Taylor Golembiewski added 15 and Tiasia McMillan a dozen. All three also led on the boards with six rebounds each.
- Colgate shot a season-high 52.7 percent (29-55) from the floor and went 12-for-14 from the line while the Eagles hit just under their average with 41.0 (25-61) from the field.
- American led in the paint, 40-38, in second chance points, 10-6, and points off the bench, 22-4, but Colgate added 24 points off AU's 17 turnovers while the Eagles picked up 16 from Colgate's 18 miscues.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American picked up a 6-4 lead early but a jumper from Colgate's Brodie sparked the Raiders' offense and sent them on an 8-2 run, including six from Brodie herself, to take a four-point lead with four minutes left.
- Colgate picked up as much as a five-point lead, once again off a bucket from Brodie, but a pair of free throws from Maddie Doring and a made trey from Johns tied the game at 8-8 by the end of the first quarter.
- The Eagles struggled to find a stop in the second quarter as Colgate steadily pulled away with an opening 12-2 run to widen the gap to double-figures at 28-18 within the first four minutes of the stanza.
- A quick four points from Johns brought the Eagles back within six but Colgate capitalized off back-to-back AU turnovers and rebuilt the 10-point cushion.
- Once again AU closed strong, though, posting six of the final eight points to make it a six-point game at the break, 36-30.
- The Eagles hovered around the six-point deficit throughout the third quarter, cutting to within three on a couple of occasions after buckets from Stack and Johns. But struggles on the defensive end continued to haunt the squad as Colgate held onto its six-point lead at 51-45 by the end of the quarter.
- Colgate shot lights out in the fourth quarter, hitting 9 of 13 in the final 10 minutes, including a 9-0 run to start the quarter.Â
- American cut the lead back down to single-digits briefly, hitting an 8-0 run behind six points from Fisher coming out of a timeout. But they couldn't maintain the run, putting up only one field goal in the final two minutes as Colgate added 10 more to close the game.
