HAMILTON, N.Y. – American University men's basketball was within striking distance in the first half, but an 18-3 run by Colgate early in the second half gave the Raiders breathing room in a 63-49 victory on Monday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• American started the game really well on the defensive end, forcing some early turnovers and tough 3-point looks.
• The Eagles held a 7-4 lead after Johnny O'Neil drained a triple with 15:18 remaining in the half.
• Stacy Beckton Jr. made two free throws to put AU on top 12-11 with 11:32 to go. It was AU's final lead of the day.
• After Beckton Jr. tied the game at 20, Colgate pieced together a 10-3 run to lead by seven with 3:37 left in the first half.
• The Raiders led 31-26 at halftime.
• After the break, Matt Rogers scored a second-chance layup to get AU within three with 16:19 to play.
• Colgate hit five triples in seven minutes to put this one out of reach in the middle part of the half as part of the 18-3 run that saw the Raiders lead by as many as 19.

BY THE NUMBERS

• American held the league's highest-scoring offense (75.7 ppg) to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.  
• Beckton Jr. led AU with 16 points and seven rebounds.
• Colin Smalls also reached double-figures, scoring 12 points.
