Vinall Scores Four and Sets All-Time Draws Record but Lacrosse Falls to UMBC

WASHINGTON - The Eagles kept it close through three quarters, but UMBC scored the final five goals of the contest to hand American University lacrosse a 17-9 loss at home on Saturday afternoon. Fifth-year senior Emma Vinall led AU with four goals and also collected eight draw controls, setting a new program record in the process.  

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With her sixth draw control of the game, Vinall reached 189 in her career to move to the top of the AU leaderboard in that category. She was already first in goals and points, and how has 167 goals after her four today.
  • Fifth-year senior Kendall Goldblum joined Vinall in recording her second-straight hat trick in as many games, posting three goals and one assist.
  • Senior Stefanie Walsh tied for the team lead in total points with Vinall and Goldblum, adding two assists to her first two goals of the season.
  • Senior Haley Harkins and Goldblum led AU with two caused turnovers each. Goldblum also had three ground balls and three draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles struck first just over one minute in with a goal from Vinall, but trailed 3-1 by the nine-minute mark of the first quarter.
  • AU picked up momentum early in the second quarter with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 4-4, but a 5-0 UMBC run put the Retrievers in the lead for good. 
  • With two goals to close out the second quarter, American got its deficit down to three, 9-6 at the break.
  • A back-and-forth third quarter saw AU with two goals and UMBC with three, despite a 9-5 advantage in shots for the Eagles.
  • With 13:19 remaining in the game, UMBC scored its first of what became five straight goals to close out the contest.
  • Isabella Fontana was tough in goal for the Retrievers, coming up with 15 saves.
  • Sophomore Helena Morrison played 38 minutes in goal for AU and made four saves while allowing eight goals.
