Lacrosse Earns its First Win of 2022 with Thrilling 15-14 Victory at George Mason

WASHINGTON – Late heroics from senior Stefanie Walsh pulled the American University lacrosse team to its first win of the 2022 season on Wednesday with a 15-14 final at crosstown rival George Mason.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH TEETERS...
"I'm very proud of how this team was able to finish the game and come out with the win. We have been getting better each week and they deserve to see it show on the scoreboard. Mason is a great team, and credit goes to them for not giving up."

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Fifth-year Emma Vinall led AU with five points off of five goals for her second consecutive hat trick of the season, while fellow-fifth year Kendall Goldblum followed with four goals, also good for a third consecutive hat trick.
  • Senior Stefanie Walsh also added four points in the win, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist.
  • Freshman Maddy Spratt scored two goals and pitched in one assist, while junior Sydney Wender added one more goal for the Eagles.
  • Walsh and Vinall led AU with two caused turnovers each.
  • Sophomore Helena Morrison played all 60 minutes in goal for the Eagles, making her first start of the season and sixth of her career. She led the team with two ground balls and picked up eight saves, falling two shy of her career-high from last season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vinall opened scoring for the Eagles, picking up her first goal of the game in the third minute of the first quarter. Mason drew even two minutes later with a goal from Lauren Distad.
  • AU had the decisive response, though, with a 7-0 behind two goals each from Vinall and Goldblum to end the first quarter. The run continued into the second stanza with another early goal from Vinall followed by a pair from Spratt to pull the Eagles ahead 8-1. Mason ended the drought midway through the quarter with a goal from Tristan Usher, and had the final say in the first half with one from Ioanna Mantzouratos to send the teams into the break at 8-3.
  • AU opened the third quarter with a pair of unanswered goals from Goldblum and Walsh, but the Patriots began to chip away at the seven-point gap with a 4-0 run before Wender ended the drought with her only goal of the day.
  • Mason continued the run a few minutes later, though, picking up two more to close the third only two goals behind at 11-9. They continued the run into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11-11 with just under nine minutes left to play.
  • A clutch goal from Goldblum sent the Eagles on a 3-0 run to reestablish a three-point cushion.
  • Mason nearly sent the game into overtime with a 3-0 run of their own in the final seven minutes, but Walsh posted the game-winner with an unassisted goal in the last 10 seconds to secure the win.

  • American is back on the road this weekend with a noon start at Howard. American's next home game is slated for Saturday, March 5, vs. Gardner-Webb.
