WASHINGTON – Despite a late barrage of 3-pointers, American University men's basketball couldn't pull off the comeback over Navy on Wednesday night, falling to the Mids, 55-46.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Navy scored the first seven points of the game to take an early lead.
• AU responded with the next five points as it was a game of runs early.
• Stacy Beckton Jr. nabbed a steal and transition layup to tie the game at 13-13 with 7:57 remaining.
• That was American's final field goal of the half as Navy closed on an 8-1 run to head into the locker room with a 22-14 lead.
• In the second half, American rattled off a 10-0 run to tie the game at 24-24 with 13:55 left.
• The teams traded buckets until Navy took control in the latter part of the half. The Mids scored nine straight points to take a 43-31 lead with 4:57 remaining.
• After a Tyler Nelson free throw put Navy up 47-34 with 2:11 to play, AU started to make a comeback.
• The Eagles made four straight 3-pointers and started fouling the Mids. The strategy almost worked as the Eagles got within 53-46 on a made trey from Jaxon Knotek with 37 seconds left.
• But the comeback was too little, too late and Navy emerged on top, 55-46.

BY THE NUMBERS

• Beckton Jr. had 13 points and matched a season-high with nine rebounds. He went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
• Johnny O'Neil had four blocks to set a new season-high in the category. He added 10 points and eight rebounds.
• Both teams struggled to shoot all night, combining to shoot 32.1 percent.
