Lacrosse Falls to Georgetown in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - After a strong first quarter for American University lacrosse, the Georgetown attack stepped up and the Eagles were unable to keep pace in a 20-8 season-opening loss to the Hoyas.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • All-time leading scorer and fifth-year senior Emma Vinall posted four goals and an assist for the day to total five points, while fellow fifth-year senior Kendall Goldblum also notched a hat trick with three goals.
  • Rounding out the scoring for American was freshman Maddy Spratt with her first career tally. Spratt also contributed two assists, as did junior Emma Hare.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Goldblum collected the first draw control of the game and promptly scored just 36 seconds in to start the Eagles off with some momentum.
  • Less than a minute later, Vinall repeated the same play with a draw and her first goal of the game.
  • From there, the scoring went back and forth for the rest of the quarter. Goldblum's second goal gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead with 2:14 left, but the Hoyas got two goals in and led 6-5 heading to the second.
  • Those two Georgetown goals would become part of a 6-0 run that put the Hoyas up 10-5 midway through the second quarter.
  • Vinall and Goldblum scored just 16 seconds apart to get AU back within three, 10-7 at 6:05 of the second quarter, but the Eagles were outscored 10-1 in the remainder of the contest.
  • Keeping the ball in transition proved tough for American in much of the game. The Eagles went 0-for-4 in clears in the second quarter, and 2-for-5 in the fourth. Georgetown failed only one clear all game, going 14-of-15.
  • The Hoyas got nine saves from junior goalkeeper Emily Gaven, and four goals from sophomore Tatum Geist.
NEXT UP
  • American will return to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 19 against UMBC at 1 p.m. All games are free admission for all fans, all season long.
