Wrestling Co-Captain Will Jarrell Striving for the Best as a Wrestler, Leader, and Teammate

| By:

Starting in summer camps as a toddler, Will Jarrell immediately knew wrestling was for him. After attending a wrestling camp at his sister’s gymnastics studio, Jarrell begged his parents to start weekly lessons in his hometown of Lincoln, Mass.

Years later, Jarrell chose to continue his wrestling career at American for the best fit between the athletics program and academics. As a political science and philosophy double major, being in the political hub of DC was an important factor for him.

Jarrell is currently in his second year as co-captain of the team. Describing himself as a problem-solver, Jarrell appreciates the opportunity to serve as a liaison between his coaches and teammates. He values that his teammates trusted him and elected him as a captain and leader for the team.

When I came to American, the captains were mentors more than just teammates, so now being in that position for others is something I really cherish.

Enduring through two major injuries and surgeries in his college career so far, Jarrell learned that the biggest challenge for him is setting the right mindset. “People wrestle better when they have confidence in themselves, and they get confidence by wrestling better,” he says. He emphasizes the importance of pushing past mental barriers and believing in your abilities to succeed.

Jarrell highlights the team dynamic both on and off the mat. “There’s always ways you can contribute to the overall progression of the team,” he said. Whether it’s competing, supporting a teammate, or working to increase the team GPA, he believes there is constantly work to be done to reach the team’s goals.

Beyond wrestling, Jarrell is interested in photography, philosophical writing, and working toward his goal of visiting all the national parks. After graduation, he hopes to work toward a law degree and PhD in philosophy before pursuing a career in politics.

Looking forward to the rest of this season, Jarrell is hoping to achieve both personal and team goals. Recently moving to the heavyweight class, he hopes to continue to adjust and transition smoothly. For the team, he aims to see everyone meet the goals they set at the beginning of the season.

I’m very excited to see everyone on the team pursue the goals they set and continue to progress towards the potential that I think we have.
