Men’s Basketball Takes Win Streak to Mount St. Mary’s Tuesday Night

WASHINGTON – After a week off, American University men's basketball returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at Mount St. Mary's. The Eagles enter the game riding a five-game win streak while Mount St. Mary's enters Tuesday's game coming off a close 68-65 loss to Rider on Saturday.

  • Freshman Geoff Sprouse led all scorers in the game, totaling a career-high 25 points. Junior Matt Rogers and freshman Jermaine Ballisager Webb each recorded double figure points as well, with Rogers totaling 20 and Ballisager Webb totaling 12.
  • American's 88 points is a season-high for the Eagles and their 71.4 percent shooting from the field tied a program record set in 2014.
  • The Eagles' five-game win streak is the first time the program has won five straight since the 2015-16 season.
  • Rogers leads the Eagles in scoring averaging 12.1 points per game, and leads in rebounds averaging 5.9 points per game.
  • Sprouse was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. This marks his second straight rookie of the week honors. He was also named the Gregorio's Trattoria Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MOUNT ST. MARY'S
  • Mount St. Mary's is in the program's first year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, after joining this spring after a 33-year run in the Northeast Conference.
  • The Mountaineers are 4-5 overall and 1-1 in MAAC action so far this season. They are coming off a 68-65 loss to Rider on Saturday.
  • Senior Jalen Benjamin is leading Mount St Mary's in scoring so far this season, averaging 19.0 points per game. Graduate student Malik Jefferson leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.6 per game while senior George Tinsley leads in blocks with 1.1 per game and Benjamin leads in assists averaging 4.7 per game.
  • Jefferson recorded his 1,000th career point in Mount St. Mary's first MAAC game last week at Saint Peter's. He is the 49th Mountaineer to reach 1,000 career points.
  • Mount St. Mary's head coach is Dan Engelstad. He is in his fifth season at the head of the program.
