Women’s Basketball Finishes Non-Conference Slate Against Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – In their final non-conference game before Patriot League play begins, the American University women's basketball team (1-10) faced off against Delaware (7-4), dropping 50-66 to the hosting Blue Hens. The Eagles were led in scoring by Emily Johns who dropped 13 and followed by Lauren Stack with 12 despite both forwards being in foul trouble for most of the second half.

American will kick off their Patriot League campaign against Lafayette (3-7) on December 30th in Bender Arena at 7 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Despite playing most of the third and the first eight minutes of the fourth with four fouls, Johns led the Eagles with 13 points while also grabbing seven boards and one assist.
  • Stack, in a similar foul trouble situation, was the Eagles second-highest points-getter, tallying 12 on the afternoon. Stack was the leader for the Eagles on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Laura Nogues checked into the game in the third period, playing three minutes to finish the period and then nine more minutes in the fourth. Nogues played twelve minutes total with five points, four assists, and one rebound on her line on the stat sheet.
  • The Blue Hens were led by Kharis Idom and Jewel Smalls with 16 points apiece. Their top scorer for the season, Klarke Sconiers, fouled out of the game just four minutes into the final period. UD's top rebounder for the season, Makayla Pippin fouled out with three minutes remaining in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite winning the tip, the first six minutes of the game belonged to the Blue Hens. The hosts outscored the Eagles 15-0, forcing six AU turnovers before Ivy Bales put American on the board with a mid-range jumper.
  • The first frame ended with Blue Hens leading the Eagles 15-4, both field goals coming from Bales. The American defense forced eight turnovers in the period to keep Delaware from scoring in the final four minutes of the first.
  • The second period began much like the first ended, with the defense of each team holding firm, neither team scoring from the floor until DeRubbo scored a three-point jumper two minutes in.
  • It was with four minutes remaining in the half that AU's leading scorer on the season, Johns, got fired up offensively. The junior forward already had a team-leading four rebounds at the time when her first shot sank.
  • The Blue Hens led 33-22 at the break, holding the Eagles to just 30% from the field in the second period while shooting 60%.
  • After six unanswered Blue Hens points in the first minute of the third frame and Johns picking up her fourth personal foul, the Eagles took a timeout and put in a smaller lineup of all guards.
  • American was unable to build momentum, trailing 43-22 at the midway point of the period until the Eagles began to full court press again. The Eagles were unable to prevent the Blue Hens from scoring but grabbing six points of their own to trail 51-28 at the end of the frame.
  • Starting the fourth the Eagles had three players with four fouls, Bales, Johns, and Stack. Johns' fifth foul forced her out of the game with two minutes remaining. Stack fouled out of the contest with ten seconds remaining.
  • In the fourth, American shot 50% from the field and held Delaware to 42%, in the frame, outscoring the Blue Hens 22 to 15, but dropping the contest 50-66.
