Women’s Basketball Travels to George Mason on Saturday

WASHINGTON – The American University women's basketball team (0-6) is making a quick road trip up to Fairfax, Va. on Saturday to take on the Patriots of George Mason University (3-5). The Eagles are on the hunt for their first win of the season and the Patriots are looking to capitalize on their recent win against ECU and turn it into a winning run.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • American have split the series against the Patriots in the last 4 games, with both wins occurring at Bender Arena.
  • The Eagles played George Mason for the first time since 2019 last season, defeating the Patriots 69-61 at Bender Arena in 2021.
  • In that meeting, junior Riley DeRubbo posted nine points and three assists off the bench while only giving up one rebound.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • While the Eagles fell in their most recent game to Howard, junior Emily Johns led the team in scoring with a career high performance of 23 points, going 7-14 from the floor and 9-10 from the free throw line.  She also had four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • With 16 rebounds, Ivy Bales was a board short of joining the program record books for single-game rebounds. Bales also grabbed nine points, four assists, and two steals in American's fall to Howard.
  • This will be the second game for the Eagles since returnng from the Bahamas. American participated in the Goombay Splash and took on No. 7 Notre Dame and Arizona State while in attendance. Johns was named to the All-Tournament team.
  • An Eagle to watch is sophomore guard Bailey Garbee, who had nine points, three assists, two rebounds. and two steals against Howard. She also shot 5-6 from the line.
  • The Eagles are still on the hunt for their first win of the season. After fierce opponents in the Bahamas and crosstown clashes against Virginia and Howard, the Eagles are looking to capitalize on their quick road trip to Fairfax, Virginia this weekend against the Patriots.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
  • Mason's best basketball has come at home this season, as they have won four-straight at EagleBank arena. The last time the Patriots did this was 2017.
  • Additionally, the Patriots are average just about 10 more points/game at home (65.5) this season than on the road (55.75).
  • Junior Taylor Jameson continues to contribute on both sides of the court averaging a team high 14.4 ppg and tallying a team best 11 steals.
  • Senior Sonia Smith and sophomore Paula Suarez pace the Mason offense, totalling 20 and 21 assists, respectively. Smith is also averaging 9.5 ppg.
  • Under the net, seniors Nalani Kaysia (6.1) and Jasmyn Doster (4.9) led the team in rebounding, while graduate student Riley Childs has tallied a team-best 10 blocks.
