Men’s Basketball Beats Saint Francis to Win Fourth Straight

LORETTO, Pa. – American University men's basketball (4-2) defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) (2-5), 55-44, on Saturday in DeGol Arena. Led by junior Matt Rogers who recorded the season's first double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, the Eagles have now won four straight games.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Two other Eagles, along with Rogers, scored in double figures with graduate student Jaxon Knotek and freshman Geoff Sprouse each recording 12 points.
  • American's four game win streak is the longest for the program since 2018-19.
  • Saturday's win marks the Eagles' second straight over the Red Flash. They now lead the all-time series 15-9.
  • Junior Chris Gleaton finished the game with a career-high six points.
  • Rogers' 16 points and 10 rebounds were a season-high for the junior.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American won the tip and opened the game with a 5-0 run to take the early lead.
  • Saint Francis responded with a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 lead with 12:54 left to play in the half.
  • Junior Matt Rogers broke the Red Flash's run with a layup to put the score at 10-7 in favor of Saint Francis with 12:35 left to play in the half.
  • The Red Flash answered with a layup of their own to push their lead out to five.
  • The two sides each had their turns at the free throw line until the game stood at 14-9, Saint Francis.
  • Rogers and junior Lorenzo Ball put in back-to-back baskets to pull American within one, 14-13, with 8:02 left to play in the half.
  • Rogers was then fouled and sent to the line for two extra shots. He made one to tie up the game with 7:40 left to play in the half.  
  • Saint Francis then took a 16-14 lead, but Gleaton and sophomore Elijah Stephens put in back-to-back three-pointers to give American the lead with 4:43 left to play in the half.
  • The Eagles put the score at 22-16 off two extra shots from Rogers.
  • With the score tied 24-24 with just under 1:30 left to play, the Red Flash had the final bucket of the half to head into the locker room with the 26-24 lead.

  • Donadio put in a layup to extend AU's lead and then drew an and-one to give AU the 33-30 lead with 16:27 left to play.
  • A few minutes later with the game tied 35-35, a 6-0 scoring run by the Eagles put them ahead 41-35.
  • Saint Francis countered with a run of its own to put the score at 43-41 with 9:30 left to play. They then pulled within one, 45-44, with 8:41 left to play.
  • Buckets by Rogers, Stephens, and Ballisager Webb made it 51-44, American, with 5:37 left to play.  
  • Saint Francis pulled within one, 51-50 with just under five minutes to play, but a 7-0 run by American at the end of the game helped them close out the 63-52 win.
