Men's Basketball Heads to NJIT on Saturday

WASHINGTON – American University men's basketball returns to the road for a weekend matchup on Saturday, Nov. 19 at NJIT in Newark, N.J.. The Eagles (1-2) are coming off their first win of the season on Wednesday over William & Mary while NJIT (0-3) is coming off a loss to San Diego. The meeting is the first between the two programs since 2007.

  • American enters Saturday's game coming off a 71-64 win over William & Mary on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Bender Arena. Five Eagles recorded double figure points in the win, led by junior Johnny O'Neil with a game-leading 17 points. Freshman Geoff Sprouse earn his first collegiate start and recorded 10 points in the win. 
  • With the Eagles' win on Wednesday, 10th-year head coach Mike Brennan moved into a tie for third on AU's all-time coaching records list, matching Ed Tapscott's 109 victories.
  • Through the Eagles three games so far this season, junior Colin Smalls is averaging a team-high 16.5 point per game, and junior Johnny O'Neil and graduate student Jaxon Knotek are averaging a team-high 5.0 rebounds per game.

  • NJIT enters Saturday's game with a 0-3 record, falling to Saint Peter's (73-59), California Baptist (59-43), and San Diego (74-64). Senior Miles Coleman led the Highlanders with a game-high 28 points in the squad's most recent game at San Diego. 
  • The Highlanders have two players so far this season averaging double-figure points. Coleman leads the team with 15.0 points per game and graduate student Souleymane Diakite is averaging 13.3 points per game. Diakite has scored at least 12 points in all three games this season.
  • NJIT returned seven players from last year's team and welcomed seven newcomers to the squad including graduate transfers Justin Anderson, Adam Hess, Kevin Osawe, and Raheim Sullivan and the 2021-22 Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year freshman Paul McMilllan IV. 
  • Saturday's game is the Highlander's home opener. After Saturday's game the Highlanders will be back on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 22 for a 1 p.m. game at Sacred Hart.
