Women’s Basketball Battles, Falls to George Washington in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – In their home opener on Thursday, the American University women's basketball team (0-2) took on crosstown foe George Washington (3-1) and fell 67-62 to the visiting Colonials. The Eagles were led in scoring by their senior leader, forward Lauren Stack who scored 13 points, followed closely by junior forward and fellow captain Emily Johns with 12 points.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman forward Molly Lavin went 3-3 from beyond the arc to end the night with nine points, and senior guard Sadie Stetson went 2-3 from behind the arc, finishing the game with six points.
  • Junior Ivy Bales led for the Eagles on the boards with eight rebounds. She also earned four assists while classmate Kayla Henning shot 5-6 from the field, scoring 11 points and taking down four rebounds.
  • The Colonials were led offensively by a 17-point performance from Mia Lakstigala, their leading scorer so far this season.
  • Stack, on top of scoring 13 points, went 5-7 from the free throw line and had three rebounds and two assists. She and Johns, who had 12 points, both had one steal apiece in the matchup for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off with the two teams close until the final two minutes of the first quarter when the Colonials went on a 13-3 scoring run to finish out the period 22-13 with the lead over the Eagles.
  • Despite keeping George Washington to shooting just 29% in the second quarter and outshooting their opponents 17-13, the Eagles finished the half down five, 35-30.
  • The third quarter the Eagles shot 40% and the Colonials 47%, earning 16 and 17 points respectively. At one point the Colonials had a 12-point lead over the Eagles before the hosts pulled back within six to end the period down 46-52.
  • A big and-1 play by Stack in the fourth quarter put American up one over George Washington with 7:37 left to play in the second half.
  • After AU took the lead in the fourth, there were three more lead changes. The teams were knotted at 62-all with 40 seconds left in the game before the Colonials knocked down a big-time three to force an Eagles' time-out.
  • An American foul with seven seconds left in the contest sealed the deal when the Colonials sunk both free throws to make it a two-possession game, claiming the 67-62 victory over the Eagles.


UP NEXT
The Eagles are back home hosting Virginia in Bender Arena on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. After that, the squad will be heading off to the Bahamas to participate in the Goombay Splash Tournament where their first game will take place on Thursday, Nov. 24 at 4:15 p.m. against Notre Dame.
