Smalls Scores Season-High 21 Points; Men’s Basketball Falls to George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite a season-high 21 points scored by junior guard Colin Smalls, the American University men's basketball team dropped its Sunday contest at George Mason, 73-56. The Eagles (0-2) led at halftime, but the Patriots (2-1) shot 55 percent from the field in the second half.

  • Freshman Deshawn Goodwyn made his first collegiate appearance in Sunday's game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American won the tip and went on a 6-0 run to open the game.
  • George Mason countered with a 5-0 run of its own to make it 6-5 early in the game. The Patriots then tied up the game with an extra shot to make it 6-6.
  • Junior Matt Rogers broke the tie for the Eagles with a three-pointer for his first points of the night with 15:20 left to play in the first half.
  • After trading baskets and the score standing at 12-12, junior Lorenzo Donadio broke the tie to put American up 14-12. Freshman Geoff Sprouse then made a three-pointer to put AU put 17-12.
  • The Patriots pulled within a basket, 17-15, but Sprouse drained another three-pointer to put American up 20-15 heading into a media timeout.
  • After Knotek put AU up 23-15, Mason went on a 4-0 run to put the score at 23-19 and force American to take a timeout.
  • An American foul sent George Mason to the line for two free shots but the Patriots only made one extra shot to pull within three points of the Eagles.
  • Smalls put in the Eagles final five points of the half to send the teams to the locker room with the score 34-27 in favor of American.
  • Mason opened up the half with a 5-0 run to pull within two points.  
  • Smalls puts in American's first points of the second half to put the Eagles in front 36-32.
  • The two sides traded the lead until with the score 55-51 in favor of Mason, the home team put in back-to-back layups to put the score at 59-51 and to start to pull away with the lead.
  • The two sides traded baskets until with 4:49 left to play, the Patriots went on a 5-0 run that would eventually secure the win for the home team.

  • American held the 3-2 block advantage in the game and made 11 three-pointers to George Mason's 10.
  • In the first half, American held the three-point shooting percentage advantage, shooting 40.0 percent from beyond the arc compared to Mason's 36.4 percent.
  • The Patriots just edged the Eagles on offensive rebounds, 9-8.
