Senior Day Sweep for Volleyball as the Eagles Take Down Holy Cross in Three Sets

WASHINGTON - It was a Senior Day sweep for American University volleyball, as the Eagles took care of business in three sets against Holy Cross and won 25-22, 25-13 and 25-10. Continuing a fantastic weekend was senior Zeynep Uzen who hit .438 and led all players with 17 kills. AU has earned the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and will head to No. 3 Navy for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

NOTABLE
  • Uzen totaled 46 kills for the weekend, averaging a whopping 6.6 kills per set. She knocked down 10 kills in just the first set against Holy Cross to set the tone for AU in the match.
  • Senior Inbal Peleg recorded assists on 31 of American's 37 kills, and averaged over 10 assists per set for the weekend's two wins.
  • Both Peleg and junior Allie Burke posted four kills with zero errors, and Burke did so on all four of her attempts to hit 1.000.
  • Sophomore Bridget Javitch led the Eagles with 14 digs.
  • Graduate student Carlie Fikse recorded seven kills and hit .375.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders were right in it the whole first set and even leading by as many as three, despite strong hitting by American.
  • Uzen, who finished the first set with an impressive 10 kills, put down six of them early on for a 10-9 lead, but the Eagles soon trailed 13-10.
  • With a 5-0 run that included two kills and a block by Uzen, AU took a two-point lead at 20-18.
  • It stayed close the rest of the way, but finally an Adelina Berisha kill ended the set at 25-22 for the Eagles.
  • The Eagles led from the first point and never trailed in the second set, jumping out to a 10-4 advantage early.
  • American knocked down 13 kills and committed just two errors on 29 attacks (.379) while the Crusaders matched their nine kills with nine errors.
  • Burke posted two blocks in the final stretch, and Berisha once again got the final point on a kill for the 25-13 set win.
  • AU cruised once again in the third set, using a 6-0 run for a 14-5 lead halfway through.
  • Sophomore Megan Tamisiea served up back-to-back aces for a 24-10 lead, and Burke knocked down her final kill for the 25-10 win.


UP NEXT
  • American is the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and will head to No. 3 seed Navy for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The winner will advance to the semifinals, to be held at the site of the regular season champion, Colgate.
