Men’s Soccer Falls to Navy in PL Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – American University men's soccer fell 1-0 in the Patriot League Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Annapolis, Md. American closes out their season with an 8-7-5 overall record and a 3-4-2 mark in Patriot League play. They entered the tournament as the sixth seed and battled all the way to the Patriot League final.
 
QUICK NOTABLES HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American was the clear aggressor in the opening half, finishing with six shots compared to two for Navy.
  • Despite the Eagles' pressure, only one shot was on the mark and was saved by Navy goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook in the 24th minute.
  • The Mids also put one of their two shots on goal, with AU's Matthew Tibbetts making the save in the 12th minute.
  • AU earned four corner kick chances in the first half, while Navy had zero.
  • The Eagles' co-leading scorer in 2022, junior Robbie Matei, took two of AU's first-half shots, while junior Nevin Baer took three. 
  • With each team needing and making just one save in the first half, the score was knotted at 0-0 heading into halftime.
  • AU's Mattias Cooper had another strong chance in the 49th minute that was saved by Holbrook, as did Baer with his fourth shot in the 71st minute. 
  • Tibbetts went to the ground to make a save in the 55th minute but that would be his final save of the game.
  • With eight minutes left in regulation, Navy's AJ Schuetz scored the only goal of the game, sending in a shot from the left side that went past Tibbetts on a deflection.
  • The Eagles had one more chance with their ninth corner of the game three minutes later, but couldn't get a clean shot off.

  • Both sides totaled three shots on goal.
  • Two yellow cards were handed out in the game, one to American and one to Navy. 
  • Junior Nevin Baer lead with a team-high four shots and two on goal.
