Maya Mrus Leads Volleyball to a Sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore

WASHINGTON - With a lineup that looked a little different due to recent injuries, American University volleyball showed its depth in coming away from a non-conference match against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a 3-0 sweep. The Eagles won by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16 in Bender Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

NOTABLE
  • The sweep was AU's fourth of the season, and improves the Eagles' home record to 8-1. Overall, AU is now 10-8.
  • Junior transfer Maya Mrus had her best match as an Eagle with a match-high 10 kills to go with seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Mrus committed just one attack error and hit a match-best .450.
  • Both Inbal Peleg and Carlie Fikse posted six kills with only one error. Peleg had four blocks, and Allie Burke led AU with five blocks.
  • Libero Bridget Javitch tallied a match-high 11 digs, and Esma Sipahi recorded a match-high 19 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a slow start on serve reception in the first set, the Eagles found their footing and took control the rest of the way.
  • With 15 team kills compared to seven for UMES, American won 25-15 in the opening set.
  • Mrus led the way with four kills in the first set, and came up with five more in the second.
  • The Hawks came up with nearly double the number of kills in the second set as in the first, but AU held strong and the out-hit them .360 to .231.
  • UMES made it interesting and fought off three set points, but a Mrus kill finally ended it in a 25-22 American win for a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • American wasn't able to come up with a lot of kills in the third set, but stayed consistent with not many hitting errors while that number went way up for UMES.
  • Five blocks and three aces got the job done in the third set and AU won, 25-16.
