#25 Field Hockey Drops Contest to Rider

WASHINGTON – Capping off a windy, rainy weekend of play, the #25 American University field hockey team (6-5, 2-1 PL) took on Rider University (5-5, 0-1 NEC), falling to the Broncs 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The lone goal for the Eagles was scored by sophomore Federica Turina Dellamaggiore.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Turina Dellamaggiore's two goals this weekend, one against Boston University and one against Rider, set her as the team leader at eight total for the season.
  • October marks the final month of regular-season play for the Eagles' field hockey team before post-season begins in November.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rider capitalized early into the matchup, scoring in the sixth minute. The goal came from the Broncs' freshman sensation Valeria Perales, who now has 10 goals this season.
  • The Broncs doubled their lead in the 23rd minute in the scuffle after a penalty corner to lead the Eagles 2-1.
  • In the third quarter, American had momentum and in the 90-seconds preceding their goal had two shots and two penalty corners before the last shot, by Turina Dellamaggiore, went into the visitor's goal and AU was back within one, down 2-1.
  • It was just three minutes into the fourth period though that Rider again took advantage and slipped a third and final goal in, retaking their two-goal lead over the Eagles.
  • Despite a high press and high intensity on the field after that third Broncs goal, the Eagles were unable to finish any of their work in the final third and dropped the game 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In penalty corners, AU took the edge 5-3. Their lone goal came as a result of a penalty corner in the third period.
  • The lone card of the game was a green card that was delivered to American.
  • Rider just topped American in shots, 9(7)-8(5).

UP NEXT
  • Up next for the Eagles, they have a full week to regroup before they're on the road at Holy Cross on October 9 at 11 a.m.
  • After that, they return home to Jacobs Complex against Lehigh on Friday, October 14 at 3 p.m.
