Women's Soccer Falls to Army Saturday Night

WEST POINT, N.Y. – American University women's soccer (1-3-6, 0-2-2 Patriot League) fell to Army West Point (5-3-5, 3-0-1 Patriot League), 1-0, Saturday night in New York. The Black Knights lone goal came off a penalty kick in the second half. 
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore Jordan Mahony and junior Olivia Simmons made their second and third start, respectively, of the season.
  • The all-time series between the Eagles and Black Knights now stands at 6-8-10 in favor of Army.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army came out looking to take the lead just two minutes into the game with a shot that hit the bottom corner of the frame, keeping the game scoreless.
  • American had its first chance of the game to take the lead in the 11th minute, off a shot by senior Cailin Panacek, but the Army goalkeeper punched the ball over the top of the net to keep the Eagles at zero.
  • American's second chance of the first half to take the lead came from senior Fisayo Iluyomade in the 25th minute but her shot was also saved by the Black Knight's goalkeeper.
  • Army found the back of the net off a penalty kick in the 54th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Iluyomade had another good-looking shot to try to even the score in the 73rd minute but Army's goalkeeper once again made the save.
  • A few minutes later the ball was scooped up by the Black Knight's goalkeeper to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the home team, after senior Ashley Molz tried the even the score in the final minutes of the game.
  • Army put in three more shots at the end of the half to try to extend its lead but two missed and one was stopped by sophomore Julia Kato as time ran out.

  • American held the 3-2 corner kick advantage.
  • Two yellow cards were handed out in the game, one to American and one to Army.
  • Army held the 15-7 shot advantage Saturday night.
  • Senior Cailin Panacek recorded a team-leading three shots while both her and senior Fisayo Iluyomade each recorded a team-leading two shots on goal.
 
UP NEXT
  • American will return home on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 2 p.m. game against Boston U.
  • The Eagles will then head to Annapolis, Md. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a midweek Patriot League test against Navy. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
