Beckton Jr. Scores 1000th Point; Eagles Drop Low-Scoring Affair at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Stacy Beckton Jr. became the 33rd member of the 1,000-point club for American University men's basketball but his 19-point performance was not enough for the Eagles on Saturday as Navy held on for a 47-45 victory.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Beckton Jr. led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-9 from the field. He played all 40 minutes and is the first Eagle to do so since Sa'eed Nelson against Loyola on Feb. 13, 2019.
  • For the second straight game, American's defense was stout, holding the Mids to a season-low in points.
  • The Eagles held Navy to 32.7 percent from the field, including 1-of-18 from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off pretty slow as neither team could get into a rhythm. The first point wasn't scored until two minutes into the game and AU didn't get on the board until the 15:42 mark.
  • The Eagles grabbed a steal before Jaxon Knotek sent a long pass ahead to Elijah Stephens for the layup to get AU within four points with 11:09 left in the first half.
  • Navy controlled the rest of the frame and led by as many as 12 before heading to the locker room with a 27-17 lead.
  • The Mids maintained their lead in the early part of the second half.
  • Beckton Jr. surpassed the 1,000-point mark by splashing a triple with 12:16 to play to cut Navy's lead to 36-29.
  • AU methodically cut into the lead, holding Navy without a field goal for almost nine minutes in the middle part of the second half.
  • Beckton Jr. drove the lane for a rim-rattling slam dunk with 3:59 to play that got AU within one point at 40-39.
  • Coming out of a timeout, AU had possession with 32 seconds left and a chance to tie, but a layup from Colin Smalls didn't fall and the Eagles were forced to foul.
  • Beckton Jr. made another 3-pointer with nine seconds left to get within one point again.
  • Navy missed the backend of a one-and-one and AU had the final possession, but was unable to find a bucket, falling to Navy 47-45.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Eagles shot 86.7 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-15).
  • American battled in the paint all afternoon, recording 26 points in the inside the key compared to 28 for Navy.
  • Beckton Jr., Johnny O'Neil and Josh Alexander led AU with five rebounds each, while Stephens had four assists to lead the Eagles.
