Men’s Basketball Faces Loyola Maryland in Saturday Battle

WASHINGTON – American University men's basketball looks to make up ground in the Patriot League playoff picture in a Saturday afternoon battle at Loyola Maryland.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Last time out, American let a nine-point lead slip away as Army shot 78 percent in the second half to defeat the Eagles, 76-66.
  • One-possession games (decided by 1-3 points) and blowouts (decided by 21+ points) have not gone American's way, as the Eagles are 0-9 in those contests. The Eagles are 5-2 in games decided between four and 20 points.
  • Since stepping into the starting lineup in late November, Matt Rogers has been up to the task. He leads the conference and ranks second in program history by shooting 64.6 percent from the field this season. The 6-9 sophomore averages 9.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
  • Stacy Beckton Jr. is on milestone watch during his fifth season as an Eagle. He has now played in 101 career games is 39 points away from becoming the 33rd player to reach 1,000 career points. He currently has 90 career blocks, which ranks ninth in program history. He is two swats away from moving into eighth place on AU's all-time career blocks list and 11 away from being the sixth Eagle with 100 career blocks.
  • Josh Alexander started the first five games this season before missing action in late November due to injury. Since his return, he has been a valuable contributor off the bench. He scored 12 points in back-to-back games against Boston U. and Bucknell and has shot 76.9 percent in (10-of-13) in Patriot League play.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT LOYOLA MARYLAND
  • Loyola University Maryland men's basketball wraps up a stretch of four of five games at home on Saturday, January 22, against American University.
  • At 5-2, Loyola has its best record in the Patriot League through seven games since joining the conference in 2013-14. Overall, at 11-7, Loyola is off to its best start through 18 games since it went 12-6 during the 2012-2013 season.
  • Cam Spencer leads the Patriot League in both points (19.1) and steals (2.2) per game as of January 21. He also tops the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.0:1), a stat that ranks him No. 15 in NCAA Division I. Spencer is 25th nationally in steals per game, while Jaylin Andrews ranks 54th with 1.9. They are one-two in the conference in steals.
  • Kenneth Jones tops the conference in assists per game (5.1) and is No. 40 nationally in that category. As a team, the Greyhounds rank 42nd nationally in assists per game (16.3).
