Men’s Basketball Falters in Second Half at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – American University men's basketball led at halftime but couldn't hold off a strong second-half performance by Army, falling 76-66 on Wednesday night.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Stacy Beckton Jr. battled foul trouble to lead AU with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
  • Johnny O'Neil matched his career-high with four assists while adding 10 points.
  • Elijah Stephens also dished four assists and grabbed two steals. He finished with 13 points and went 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • O'Neil hit a 3-pointer for AU's first points of the game to give the Eagles an early 3-2 lead.
  • Beckton Jr. splashed a triple with 8:10 to go in the half to stop a 6-0 Army run and tie the game at 17-17.
  • American rattled off a 14-2 run of its own, pushing the lead to 28-19 with 3:16 left in the half. It was AU's largest lead of the game.
  • After a Stephens 3-pointer, AU held a 31-25 lead at halftime.
  • In the early part of the second half, American countered every punch Army threw, holding strong through the first five minutes to maintain its lead.
  • Beckton Jr. was whistled for his fourth foul with 14:06 to play and was forced to sit for the next six minutes. Army proceeded to take the lead and push it to as many as seven with AU's leader on the bench.
  • AU cut the deficit to four on a 3-point play by Connor Nelson with 6:51 to play but couldn't get any closer.

  • American hit 50.0 percent of its shots on the evening, matching  its best shooting performance in Patriot League play.
  • 17 turnovers by AU led to 15 points for Army.
  • The Eagles had eight free-throw attempts compared to 24 for Army.
